Australia will not be granted an exemption from US tariffs on aluminium and steel imports, the White House says.
US President Donald Trump had previously said he would consider excluding Australia from the 25 per cent tariffs, which take effect on Wednesday.
But White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt has now told the ABC:
"He considered it, and considered against it. There will be no exemptions."
Asked why, Ms Leavitt said: "America First steel."
"If they want to be exempted, they should consider moving steel manufacturing here," she said.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the decision as "entirely unjustified"....

I wouldn’t mind having that money in our own economy. Ditto for the extravagant tariffs they charge us. 300% tariff for dairy from Canada when our own farmers are suffering? Gimme a break.

The United States should make it's own steel and so should Australia. From a security perspective, it would be better for Australia to be dependent on the U.S. for steel, than vice versa.

To me the question is how can it be possible for a commodity as heavy and as
expensive to transport as steel - made in a location as far away as possible-
be competitive with domestic steel?
Most would agree - labor and benefits costs, government intrusion, taxes, etc.
I agree with the tariffs - but for a commodity as mission critical as steel - we have to be better than the rest.
The fact that we have to slap a tariff on steel made halfway round the planet is embarrassing.
Time for us to step up and just be better.
If I remember correctly, Australia was one of “Five-Eyes” countries that conspired against President Trump during his first term in office.
