California Is Getting Rich Off of Medicaid
Unleash Prosperity ^ | 03/06/2025 | Stephen Moore

Our friend Paul Winfree at EPIC reports that California is expecting to take in almost $120 billion in federal Medicaid funds in the coming fiscal year – a gift from Uncle Sam. That’s up 23% over two years.

This staggering number is hard to believe, but it’s right in Newsom’s budget:

California will receive more in federal Medicaid funding next year than Florida’s entire state budget – and just the increase they want is more than Nevada’s entire state budget.

And here’s the kicker, from Winfree again: California openly brags about using a provider tax scam to avoid paying what is supposed to be the state share:

Half the population of California is on Medicaid. Half.

Hospitals that take MediCal will really get hit, particularly Valley Medical Center in San Jose, and County USC in LA.

I’m fairly certain that is the case with the medical industry in general.

A lot of that MediCal bill is strictly mismanagement, because a large fraction of those costs are in the NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit only because of a lack of (much cheaper) prenatal care.

This is the price of stupidity, and frankly, it is abusive to children, often with lifelong consequences.

This is in part why medical costs are so high and you get so little for it.

Lets be real. The illegals in Cali are a major factor in using resources and not paying anything for them.

How do you spell Medicaid in illegal alien talk? Very expensive hobby these dems have.

we happen to know an immigrant living in California, has needed a knee operation for several years but the “free” medicaid/medical keeps postponing it
so he is in pain, limps, and can’t work (this one likes to work, incidentally)

Oh please. I thought I'd cover an aspect of this most don't understand. Just because I didn't offer obeiscance to your pet obsession doesn't mean that I don't understand and agree with it. What I'm pointing out is that, not only is California using Federill funds for medical care for illegals, they're incompetent at managing that care delivery, and it will cost more into the future as a consequence.

Capiche?

I get it, CA and I am sure other States are required to provide a certain level of support for those who are on Medicaid, but they don’t pay their share, instead inventing loopholes to make sure the burden is felt nationwide.

Correct. The goal is cash flow for a bureaucracy that funds politicians through union dues. It is not cost-effective care for the medically indigent.

Insane. Medicare is like a job they have to do nothing for.

RE: has needed a knee operation for several years but the “free” medicaid/medical keeps postponing it

Would Bernie Sander’s Medicare for all plan have made his situation better?

What if he were in Canada?
