In Ukraine, a mix of anger and pride as Zelenskyy called disrespectful and ordered out of White House

As Ukrainian troops try to stave off Russia's military from advancing through the eastern part of the country, they face tens of thousands of enemy soldiers.

But when Ukraine's president sat in the Oval Office on Friday afternoon, he faced a different kind of battle — the blunt testiness of the U.S. Trump administration. The combative exchange left Ukraine's allies and many of its citizens in shock and dismay. Yet for others, there was pride in how Volodymyr Zelenskyy stood his ground.

"I was angry, obviously," said Andriy Tkachuk, a Ukrainian soldier serving in the country's north who spoke to CBC News by Zoom.

"We understand Trump and his administration have a political strategy, but when we speak about money, we forget about people."

"We understand Trump and his administration have a political strategy, but when we speak about money, we forget about people."

Huh???

Mr. Ukraine soldier, not sending money means Trump does not care about people, while sending money gets more people killed.

Trump is trying to save lives, and I guess to the Ukraine soldier that is a bad thing.

Zeepers flame away.

The Zeepers are willing to bankrupt their own country, destroy civilization and slaughter billions of people in a nuclear holocaust to get their eternal quest the great white whale aka Putin. This is about fighting a war Reagan avoided.

The thug Putin can’t struggle for two years in a bloody slogging match for the cesspool called the Ukraine and win and then suddenly blitz his way to the channel like they prattle on about, it’s utter nonsense.

Some of the women and children. @ 6 million out of 37.7 million.

We in Spain got about 250,000 initially, but we seem to be down to 200,000 as some have found other countries, it seems in many cases returned to Ukraine.

If it gets worse I expect there will be an organized policy of moving all Ukrainian women and children abroad. That will mean 10-15million more, to be absorbed mainly by Western Europe.

Give him 5 years with no sanctions (that’s a lot of money) and he certainly can rebuild his military on a modern basis and find someone else to pick on, maybe invade the Baltics.

Zelinskyyyyyyy is a scumbag. After shouting at our representative and showing up late for 0a meeting with him in Ukraine, he said the agreement was fine and he would sign it. Before he met with Trump he clandestinely met with SEDITIOUS DemocRats and they conspired to torpedo the signing and embarass Trump.
Zelensky then proceeded to do so. Unless those ingrates in Ukraine dump this pig, Trump should refuse any future aid or talk to them. And they can practise saying “I surrender” in Russian.

“And they can practise saying “I surrender” in Russian.” They haven’t yet, after winning through episodes of immense pressure. It was touch and go at Kharkiv, Izyum, Mykolaiev, etc. But nothing like that threatened fast moving breakthrough is at all likely at this point. That’s the only way one gets any significant number to surrender.

Won’t that soldier be surprised when he pulls the trigger and suddenly realized his boss called the benefactor of the soldiers ammunition a bitch and was cut off and there was no bang? Reality check: you don’t sh-t where you eat. Or shouldn’t.

“This is about fighting a war Reagan avoided.”

Reagan certainly didn’t avoid it by pulling divisions out of the Fulda Gap. He reinforced US forces in Germany.

The point is he won the Cold War without having to fire a shot. Here we the US/NATO have blundered into this fiasco by our own hand meddling in Ukrainian politics, over throwing duly elected governments(we the US put up with that here or a NATO country having our governments overthrown by an outside power? NO!) and the corruption is off the scale for the Ukraine, US/NATO/EU and the other European countries.

Our and Europe’s foreign policy and military establishments are stuck in 1977 and think the world hasn’t changed or the country. This is an obsession of getting Putin and Russia at all cost when they clearly are not that big of a threat as China, but we are expending treasure to make them one, this is a stupid waste of resources we can not afford.

After watching the US government’s foreign policy and military adventures since 1992 it’s clear the stark raving lunatics are in charge. Trump’s administrations has been the only sane foreign policy time periods for this country. We need to be splitting Russia away from China but everything we have done since Clinton is drive them into each others arms.

And Russia had thirty years to rearm after 1991 and this is the best they can do a bloody slog in the Ukraine lasting multiply years and in five years they will start taking over the rest of Europe, seriously.

In 2013-2014, when all this began, the only thing Ukraine wanted was the quite reasonable and innocent goal of joining the EU. The massive economic gains all the other Est Bloc countries had realized by then showed this as a no-brainer.

Yankovych, Putins bought man, had previously been for the EU. He turned on a dime and flipped on all his domestic political agreements. Putin wanted his neighbors to be in HIS economic bloc, not the EU. That caused a wave of rage.

There is no need to invoke Western skulduggery. It was the EU itself that was the chief obstacle in Ukraines EU accession before all this. The Ukrainians had finally gotten the EU to concede (after 10+ years of wrangling). There was no western plot - Ukraine badly wanted the EU candy bowl because thats simply what it is. This whole matter was a controversy inside Ukraine and Russia.

Putin chose to escalate the thing after every part of the political establishment in Ukraine made Yanukovych flee. This was a defeat for Russia so Putin did all he could at the time to grab land from Ukraine.

NATO was stuck in 1992, not 1977. It was functionally useless as nobody had a deployable force anymore. The US was running around the world, but the former OTHER armies in West Germany as of 1977 were utterly gone.

The bigger problem in re China is ideological. This is a conflict on the very definition of independence and sovereignty. After WWI it has become customary that a country defines itself by its popular will, that is how one defines legitimacy. Look at East Asia - the fringe out there by China - all of these countries defines itself that way. China does not respect this - a country is legitimate only if it conforms to Chinese will, or expediency. That is entirely what the China arguments are about. And its not just about Taiwan.

The war in Ukraine is about exactly that too, the very point at issue with China. Abandoning Ukraine sends a message from Tokyo to Canberra that “we are perfectly willing to abandon you too”.
