Big Brother’s alive and well in the UK — here’s why we have to be vigilant in the US

On the heels of Veep JD Vance’s 100% correct slam on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over speech rights, the latest Big Brother stunt from the United Kingdom has hit the airwaves.

A 74-year-old Scottish woman was arrested for silently holding up a sign outside an abortion clinic asking people walking in if they wanted to chat with her.

Rose Docherty is the first person arrested under the so-called “Safe Access Zones Act,” a 2024 law forbidding even the peaceful exercise of speech within 200 meters of abortion clinics.

Vance restricted himself with Starmer to criticizing the terrible effects UK speech laws might have on Americans as a result of their enforcement against US companies.

But the Docherty arrest proves that doesn’t go nearly far enough.

Hers is far from the only such case: 2023 saw Isabel Vaughan-Spruce arrested in Birmingham for silently praying outside a clinic; in 2022 Adam Smith-Connor was charged in Bournemouth for the same “crime.”

...

And that’s to say nothing of the UK’s overall Orwellian approach to speech, which sees people arrested for Facebook posts that wouldn’t raise an eyebrow stateside.

Britain is a nominal democracy and our closest trans-Atlantic ally — but on this issue looks increasingly to be voluntarily lowering an iron curtain.

The sobering point is that this law and the UK speech laws are bipartisan. The Conservatives could have eliminated them or cut them back. They didn’t. Starmer is just using the tools that were in place when he took over.

Wokeism run amuck, while Britain transforms itself into an Islamic Republic.
Where are the real men who will reclaim their nation before it’s too late?

As I understand it, Parliament is not really constrained by anything like our Constitution. Yes, there is the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights, but any guarantees within them can be overturned by an act of Parliament. Now, Parliament may be reluctant to change long-standing traditions, but change them they can.

Orwell wrote 1984 as a warning, not as an instruction manual.

There was a time when Englishmen had to show the King what armaments they had to protect the Realm. The Assize of 1181 was the first. Other Assizes came later.
Now Englishmen have been so disarmed they can not stop a massive moslem invasion without a shot being fired in defense of the realm.

Vance upset them because he focused a bright light on their highly-questionable claims to be dedicated to maintaining free societies. The author is correct that we have to be diligent, because there are way too many Americans who also don’t support freedom of thought and expression.

There was a post here earlier this week from John Derbyshire who pointed out that even some of his less-controversial writing would get him jail time in the U.K. And he added, “Thank God and the Founding Fathers for the First Amendment.” Yep. That’s the sine qua non of our liberty.

It was genius and prophesy--and no accident--that George Orwell set 1984 in Britain.

To paraphrase Lincoln, the UK is a gubmint of elites, by elites and for elites.

Not any different from that gubmint we brought to its knees at Yorktown.
