A child dies of Ebola in Uganda, raising concern over disease surveillance in outbreak

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — A 4-year-old child became the second person to die of Ebola in Uganda, the World Health Organization said Saturday, in a setback for health officials who had hoped for a quick end to the outbreak that began at the end of January.

The WHO has given Uganda at least $3 million to support its Ebola response, but there have been concerns about adequate funding in the wake of the U.S. administration’s decision to terminate 60% of USAID’s foreign aid contracts.

Dithan Kiragga, executive director of a non-governmental group that supports Ebola surveillance in Uganda, told The AP that his group had stopped its work supporting local health authorities in screening traveling passengers after the termination of its contract with USAID. The five-year contract, signed in 2022 and worth $27 million, employed 85 full-time staff who were employed in a range of public health activities, Dr. Kiragga said.

Charles Olaro, the director of health services at Uganda’s Ministry of Health, said that U.S. aid cuts hurt the work of some non-governmental groups supporting the response to infectious diseases.

“There are challenges, but we need to adjust to the new reality,” Dr. Olaro said, speaking of the loss of U.S. funding.

I think it was Musk who said that funding for things like ebola was only paused but had resumed and this was in the last couple of weeks.

The media cared little about an ebola outbreak when Obama was President. They went so far as to agree with him in allowing Africans to travel to the US during the outbreak. Obama didn’t worry about ebola then, so the media didn’t either...

One child dies of ebola and this raises concerns. Hundreds are slaughtered and beheaded in Congo and nobody bats an eye. Weird.

I wonder if that is totally made up, or if they killed a poor child for WHO propaganda?

Samaritan’s Purse/Franklin Graham brought ebola patients (plural? IIRC) into the US, one of whom was vomiting ebola-packed blood outside his apartment in Texas, I seem to recall.

Several US nurses contracted the illness as well but, fortunately, the spread was contained.

It SHOULD have been contained right there in freaking AFRICA where it belongs.

Take off and nuke it from orbit, it’s the only way to be sure.

You are smearing Samaritan’s Purse, they brought home their own two American missionaries for treatment, Dr. Kent Brantly and Missionary Nancy Writebol, the guy in Dallas who was already in America had nothing to do with Samaritan’s Purse.

Samaritan’s Purse was engaged in the fight.
“The Democratic Republic of the Congo is currently experiencing the world’s second worst Ebola outbreak in history,” said Rachel Gruenloh, Samaritan’s Purse Ebola response specialist. “With well over 2,300 Ebola cases now confirmed in the country, Samaritan’s Purse has responded by opening a 56-bed Ebola treatment center for patients in DRC’s Ituri province. We are also supporting a number of health facilities in the region with ongoing training on infection prevention and control, providing them with the knowledge and physical tools needed to identify and fight Ebola in their communities.”

It was grossly irresponsible to bring ANYONE infected with Ebola into this country.

Period.

Buckle up folks. Keep your hands and arms inside the ride at all times...
Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

The false positive rate was 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...

LOL, No you don’t refuse to treat Americans, doctors, and our GIs, period.

Those two American Christians were treated as they should have been.
