As Trump eyes birthright citizenship, ‘birth tourists’ see opportunity
The Washington Post ^ | February 28, 2025 | Terrence McCoy

Marcelio Moreira had never been to the United States. He didn’t speak much English. But soon after he learned his wife was pregnant last May, he knew he wanted his daughter to be American...

“My daughter’s children and grandchildren will then have citizenship, too,” Naue rejoiced. “She can pass it down through the generations.”

President Donald Trump doesn’t think it should be so easy to become an American. Calling birthright citizenship “absolutely ridiculous,” and incorrectly asserting that “we’re the only country in the world that does this,” he signed an executive order in January that revoked automatic citizenship for children born to foreign visitors on tourist, student and work visas, as well as to undocumented immigrants.

The order, which has been blocked by federal judges and is expected to end up before the Supreme Court, has renewed fundamental questions about what it means to be an American and cast a spotlight on a practice known as “birth tourism.”

*** But in Brazil, where having an American child has become something of a status symbol among the wealthy and upwardly mobile...

Social media in Brazil is awash with stories of families who have done just that. One medical agency active on Instagram, with nearly 74,000 followers, is Have My Baby in Miami, which goes by Ser Mamãe em Miami in Portuguese. Every year, it helps around 125 Brazilian women give birth in the United States. Another agency, MeuBB Americano — My American Baby — has a large photo on its website of an infant asleep beneath an American flag.

“A complete experience for the arrival of your baby in the U.S.,” the agency promises.

This needs to stop. And Brazilians are a small fraction of the problem - it is mostly Chicoms and Mexicans who cross the border to deliver babies in California.

and incorrectly asserting that “we’re the only country in the world that does this,”

Typical WasPost propaganda. 99% of the countries in the world do not allow this. The essence of what Trump said is the truth and these little rats know it

“he knew he wanted his daughter to be American...”

IOW an illegal alien or even a birth tourist foreigner decides who will constitute the American citizenry, not us...the Americans.

Does anyone know of any clubs that automatically include the children of people who break into the clubhouse?

The post, like all liberal rags, are selling the anchor baby narrative regardless of the fact it’s complete fiction and has no standing in the law.

Hell, even the example illegal in the story understands citizenship passed thru the parents.

Bottom line... we’re not standing on magic pixie dust. Squirting a kid onto our soil doesn’t magically give you a newly minted American. That’s just absurd.

And President Trump is almost right... Canada is the only country that believes they’re standing on magic pixie dust

I remember reading about lots of russians and Chinese doing this as well with special websites and agencies in the US to assist...

So... two thieves break into your house and give your property to their kids who then get to keep it... because "birthright".

These children have no claim to a right their parents never had.

Problem
Birthright citizenship “absolutely ridiculous,” and incorrectly asserting that “we’re the only country in the world that does this.

Problem Solved
Trump executive order in January that revoked automatic citizenship for children born to foreign visitors on tourist, student and work visas, as well as to undocumented immigrants.

“And President Trump is almost right... Canada is the only country that believes they’re standing on magic pixie dust”

The Library of Congress has a report on the subject:
https://maint.loc.gov/law/help/birthright-citizenship/global.php

According to their data, it’s not just the U.S. and Canada. Most of Latin America allows birthright citizenship, as do a few countries elsewhere. There are some countries that are in various “sort of” categories, but the category of “Unconditional at birth” is shown in pink and is most of the Western Hemisphere.

Sorry, I should have qualified the statement...

Of all the countries that aren’t complete cesspools... Canada is the only one that awards citizenship via the soil. All the other first world countries observe citizenship thru the patents

Americans are idiots and suckers when it comes to U.S. Citizenship. However, I think it’s mainly those maggots who don’t work and pay taxes.

MMusson writes: “Not a single EU country has birthright citizenship.”

According to the LoC report, even these more qualified versions of Trump’s statement aren’t completely accurate. France is one of the countries I described as having “sort of” birthright citizenship. The child born in France to foreign parents can acquire citizenship through jus soli by meeting certain minimal conditions. “Birthright Citizenship Based on Age & Residency of Child (Automatic): Any child born in France of foreign parents automatically becomes a French citizen upon reaching the age of majority (eighteen) if he/she resides in France and has resided in France (continuously or not) for at least five years since the age of eleven.”

Nevertheless, it’s certainly true that birthright citizenship is far more common in the Western Hemisphere than elsewhere. I have no idea why, for example, third-world countries in Africa and South America should be so markedly different in this respect.

when you have a social support system like social security, people from the cesspool nations will literally travel half way around the planet to get in on it.

it’s one of the reasons we don’t allow magical dirt.

the other being the ability for a foreign nation to overtake this one simply by dropping spawn on our soil... unchecked. this cannot be allowed.

Citizenship via the soil cannot be allowed if you wish to keep your country

If allowed, all an aggressor would have to do is flood your country with pregnant loyalists and within 20 years, your country isn’t yours anymore.
