A Connecticut student who graduated with honors in June is now suing her former high school, claiming she can't read or write and is failing college as a result of her alma mater's poor curriculum.
Aleysha Ortiz was born in Puerto Rico and moved with her family to Hartford, Connecticut, when she was 5 years old. She graduated through the school program despite reading at a kindergarten or first grade level as a sixth grader, according to reporting by CNN.
During her last month at Hartford Public High School, after she disclosed she was attending the University of Connecticut in the fall, Ortiz completed additional testing that revealed she had dyslexia and "required explicitly taught phonics, fluency and reading comprehension," the first of which is taught in kindergarten.
"I didn't know English very well, I didn't know the rules of the schools. There were a lot of things that they would tell me, and I let myself go by what the teachers would tell me because I didn't understand anything," the 19-year-old revealed.

Reminds me of Dexter Manley when he testified to Congress about graduating High School without being able to read.
I wonder what her SAT scores were.
Olympic grade blame shifting.
social promotion not a thing?
“””” she disclosed she was attending the University of Connecticut “””
That tells you what the admission standards are for that fine school.
She is pretty enough that She doesn’t need an education. /duck
She did her job. She filled a spot for 12 years, kept the funding coming, and kept the educrats fat and happy.
I think maybe not. Consider the experts told this minor she was learning not only the minimum but she exceeded the standards set forth for an education required for our society.
Now she finds out she did not get that. Maybe she would have worked harder if the had better instruction, materials, culture?
I actually support them being sued.
Where the heck were her parents all this time?!
Didn’t Nick Nolte do a movie about this?
This reminds me of that Canadian civil servant who took the government to court for paying him $150 grand a year, and giving him absolutely nothing to do. He just sat in his officer pushing paperclips around.
Reality is catching up.
“ I’m a very passionate person and I like to learn,” Ortiz shared. “People took (away) that opportunity for me to learn, and now I’m in college and I wanna take advantage of that. Because this is my education.”
She’s not being honest with herself either. If she liked to learn, then why did she choose to go this route.
“ Ortiz said she used apps to translate text-to-speech and speech-to-text to complete her assignments..”
It’s a civil rights violation to fail to educate our children properly. Covid was the greatest abuse.
Autism...
She could not read. Surely she and her parents knew she was not doing well.
So I’m guessing she somehow avoided the SATs?
Serves UConn right.
Oh I agree there are more to hold accountable, but we can embrace the power of “AND” here.
Why shouldn’t a school be held to account for certifying students who literally cannot read after 12 years?
All the school had to do was fail students who could not achieve satisfactory results, the school failed to do that and needs to be held accountable.
What’s the problem? A few years outrageous salary for turning off viewers on a cable news network and she’ll be set for life. Maybe become a big city mayor too.
not the schools fault it’s the parents not spending time with child and either getting her help themselves (plenty of tutoring businesses) or requesting meeting with teachers about what can be done.
parents are her main providers/up bringers, fault starts with them.
