Niagara Falls, N.Y., May Deploy New License Plate Readers

Two dozen cameras capable of reading license plates may soon be in operation at locations selected by the police department across the City of Niagara Falls.

City council members have been asked by Mayor Robert Restaino’s administration to consider approval of a $300,100 grant-funded contract with SHI International Corp., a New Jersey company that offers surveillance equipment to municipalities in partnership with another firm, Flock Safety. The proposed agreement is on the agenda for consideration by city lawmakers during today’s council meeting.

Under the proposed contract, the city would pay SHI International Corp. $12,100 to install 24 new, outdoor, solar-powered surveillance cameras capable of recording and reading license plates at “locations selected by the Niagara Falls Police Department.” Under the agreement, camera installation would be performed by Flock Safety or its subcontractor and the equipment would be supported by the company’s cloud-based automated license plate recognition software at an annual cost of $72,000 over a period of four years. The council resolution indicates that funding for the project is available from the New York State Law Enforcement Tech Grant previously awarded to the city’s police department.

I saw a plate reader at a demo. Scary, read every plate of every car that drove by. Couple that with Skynet and we indeed are a prison planet

Freedom as we dream it is an illusion. We are being watch and tracked everywhere we go and we have bought into lock, stock, and barrel all in the name of security, convenience, and oh its cool see what my phone can do.

I have been telling people this for years, that it is widely employed and widely used. And they look at me like I have three heads.

All those cameras you see at intersections are not just there for...nothing. And for years, storage is cheap.

A date/time stamp. Coordinates of the camera. And that is it. It is a minuscule blob of data. You can have your movements in an automobile traced to a minute degree of granularity if the government or police want or need to do it.

Good, many with phony plate holders aren’t paying insurance or are illegal aliens, criminals and those just not registering their cars leaving honest citizens paying the freight. If the car is legally registered one has nothing to worry about.

A judge in Virginia threw out a case recently based on lack of probable cause, arguing that blanket surveillance and then use of the readers to perform automated searches for infractions or warrants violated the 4th Amendment.

Use of the readers to record data and then use the data to look for a specific vehicle after a crime was committed in a specific area was ok, but not blanket lookups.

This sounds right to me, especially when municipalities use the traffic code simply as a means of extortion and high fines followed by warrants as a system of peonage for the poor.

Sorry but that is naive. All tracking of government is wrong. We are a country born on freedom.

Plate readers can tell if you have been to a gun store or been to a political rally or they can target you for surveillance because you oppose woke nonsense.

Data lives on forever.

Exactly, 2 person van. One driving & passenger using laptop with van mounted reader scanning license plates searching vehicle/owner violations. Then a boot is added to eventually tow!
