Zelensky calls US-Ukraine minerals deal a ‘framework’ as it emerges agreement has no security guarantees

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky says a draft deal with the US on resources is a “framework” whose success depends on Donald Trump as it emerged the text, a draft of which was obtained by CNN, stops well short of providing Kyiv explicit security guarantees.

With Trump bent on bringing Russia’s war to a swift end and recouping some of Washington’s financial aid to Kyiv, Zelensky is hoping that the natural resources deal can secure the US president’s future support, as well as security guarantees for Ukraine.

But the final version of the text seen by CNN said only that the United States “supports Ukraine’s efforts to obtain security guarantees needed to establish lasting peace,” without making explicit commitments.

At a press conference in Kyiv, Zelensky conceded that the deal does not have “concrete steps on security guarantees” because these need to be decided jointly with the US and Europe.

No security guarantees means, it could be decided by Ukraine, and in conjunction with the Europeans.

But, Putin and Trump won’t leave it up to Zelensky and/or the Europeans. In that case, a deal will be much harder to finalize.

The whole deal is designed to schmooze the issue: the US gets deeply involved in many parts of Ukraine's economy, which implies any future Russian attack risks a direct confrontation with the US almost immediately.

Meanwhile, as Trump pointed out yesterday, current and future US military assistance to Ukraine continues until a ceasefire on the basis of indefinite future payments from a war-torn Ukraine.

Sounds like a win-win to me.

Our presence and vested interest in Ukraine based on this deal will effectively act as a deterrent to Putin conducting a future invasion. What about that don’t these morons understand?

We have pulled out of other countries when the heat got to be too much to bear. Trump is a strong president and he could make all parties stick to the deal, whatever it ends up being. But, what's to say that a future democrat or republican president won't abandon Ukraine as soon as the Russian threat rears its ugly head again?

Zelensky should not have ANY guarantees, as I remember the Frame Work Liar Zelensky did for Hillary Clinton and Biden in the Russia, Russia, Russia False Flag Frameup of President Trump.

Zelensky should be hanged for that.

“the US gets deeply involved in many parts of Ukraine’s economy, which implies any future Russian attack risks a direct confrontation with the US almost immediately.”

The US getting involved in a war with Russia over Ukraine will be President Trump’s downfall. I wouldn’t put it past Ukraine to create some kind of false flag to start it.

Both Presidents are too smart, too sophisticated and grounded to let that happen. Well, unless a deepstater drugs them maybe.

I voted to end this war and get us out of Ukraine. That best be happening or it won’t be a good thing.

The mineral deal? I am not so sure about that.

I agree with your assessment.

Why? I simply can't see Putin risking a confrontation with Trump. After three years the Russian army can't even defeat Ukraine by itself.

Not sure why you blame the Ukrainians for being extorted by Biden. It’s hard to blame a foreign country in a difficult situation when the US Vice President has his hand out for payoffs.

Because it's the right thing to do.

A mineral deal means . . . what?

1) Does it mean that the US commits to buying minerals? Got no problem with that, since there aren’t any there.

2) Does it mean the US pays in advance for XXXXX tons of minerals that have not been mined, have no mining companies deployed to mine and no price specified per ton?

3) Why would this be a security guarantee? The minerals exist elsewhere — in places not being bombed and need no security guarantees.

4) Now, since this is supposed to be repayment, it should mean Ukraine deploys miners to mine the mineral, stick it on a ship and ship it to the US, with all relevant costs/salaries being paid by Ukraine. That would be getting your money back.

5) What exactly is this deal? No explicit security guarantees are in it. Is it a deal to sell minerals for the going price? Hell, you can do that elsewere. The US gets nothing from this.
