The Welfare Trap: “Entitlement” programs are two-thirds of the federal budget.
Unleash Prosperity ^ | 02/19/2025 | Stephen Moore

Speaking of the budget bulge, our friends at EPIC point out that the “entitlement” programs are two-thirds of the federal budget. Welfare is a big slice of that giant pie.

Welfare spending is bulging even though Covid ended years ago. Biden gutted work requirements for able-bodied citizens while expanding benefits.

We all want a safety net, but it must be a hand-up, not a handout. As the 1996 welfare reforms with time limits and workfare (thank you Newt Gingrich and Bill Clinton) proved, the best way to improve lives and to pull people out of the dependency trap is to get them into jobs that offer an upward path.

Work requirements should apply to food stamps, housing subsidies, Medicaid, and cash assistance. Conservatives want this. Liberals are resisting.

Do they WANT people to stay on welfare?

Probably little of the entire welfare industry money goes to the poor, most of it is funding for government workers and their world.

Only about 20% gets to the folks in need, the rest to run the fiefdoms.

We need to change to a sliding scale of money and benefits to help people wean themselves off the system.

Right now it is all or nothing, making it almost impossible to work your way out of welfare.

Also a sliding scale in relation to income and assets.

A lot of folks who need some help can't get it.

Lots of waste, fraud and abuse in the welfare programs.

I saw it first-hand when I drove friends to apply for their ‘benefits’. They had kids wearing $300 Jordan sneakers, and the mothers wearing great expensive-looking clothes and jewelry.

I went away from the welfare office in denial about where the money was coming from, since, ‘it wasn’t coming out of my pockets or from my income taxes. Better to not think about it or I could go crazy with infuriation.

I think the Musk team proved that one third plus of the US budget is fraud.

Yes, what you said. And how many layers of administrative bureaucracy, which just eats up the funding, with no value added?

Hoping the work requirements are increased, as well as I would like to see some effort to eliminate the duplication of how many times we pay to feed the same schoolchildren. I would not be opposed to restrictions on SNAP benefits, to restrict the items or types of items that are eligible (example: no soft drinks, no lobster tails, no custom made cakes, limited sweets and snack foods.... etc.).

But we’re feeding school children absolute krep. I’d rather spend more on decent food to keep them healthy. Fewer medicare payments when they grow up.

This includes the sacred monthly check. There is no touching it even on this forum.

Wasn’t it Barack Hussein Obama who doubled the number of Black folks on welfare by using Acorn to teach classes on getting the most government benefits ?
Elon and DOGE please audit the Obamaphone program !

SS Disability should be separated from SSI.
Those of who have paid into it SS, even though they knew it was a ponzi scheme they also had no choice - should be made ‘whole’ as to what we have been promised. Anything other than that and benefits promised to vets should be on the table.

Does this include all the government make-work jobs for special demographics? Plenty of jobs are just stealth welfare.

Liberals think the more people on welfare is a success.
Conservatives think the more people off welfare is a success.

The drive and pride to better one”s
self melted away long ago.
I believe it ended with the baby
boomers generation.
We spoiled our kids.
They grew up in a world of plenty.

I wish I could have a lump sum of all the SS tax I, my wife, and our employers have paid. I’d invest it my way, it’d grow faster than inflation, thus my 4% annual income withdrawals would grow (most years), and our kids would inherit it.
