Yanukovych ran on a pro-EU platform in order to win, and then immediately after being pressured by Putin, suddenly announced Ukraine would join the Russian Union which led to mass protests.

Both sides tried to influence Ukraine, problem for Russia is that no nation in eastern Europe wants economic ties with poorer Russia vs the EU, which has a much higher standard of living.

If you think hundred's of thousands of Ukrainians came out to protest because of Nuland or McCain, and not because they were poor and wanted a much better standard of living, for themselves and their children, you don't understand human nature.

Yes, both sides, the West and Russians tried to influence Ukraine. Not sure why that concept is difficult to grasp.

As to Nuland settling the score, it was Nuland and the Obama administration, who refused to provide ANY lethal weapons to Ukraine during two years of war. The Trump administration was first to send lethal weapons- javelin missiles.

President Obama’s dithering — issuing vapid warnings that Putin laughed off and refusing to provide the Ukrainian military with arms to defend themselves.

But Obama would not arm the Ukrainians. It was not until Donald Trump became president that they were provided with serious defensive weaponry, though it would obviously never be enough if Putin decided to mass Russia’s far superior forces and invade — which he waited to do until Obama’s vice-president, Joe Biden, was in the Oval Office.
