Europe’s Reality Check
The National Interest ^ | 2/20/25 | Mathew Blackburn

Europe’s weakness has never been so openly on display. President Donald Trump has shattered the existing framework of Western support for Ukraine. America has officially abandoned a hugely costly and failed nineteen-year quest to expand NATO into Ukraine. The commitment to ensuring Kyiv regains its pre-2014 territory is now canceled. The United States will neither send troops to Ukraine nor extend Article 5 to any Western “peacekeepers” deployed there. Europe is now expected to foot the bill of defending and rebuilding Ukraine while America seeks to recoup some of the $175 billion it has spent on the war with a deal granting it ownership of Ukrainian rare earth minerals. According to Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg, Europe won’t even have a decisive say in the deal America makes to end the war. At an emergency summit in Paris called straight after a traumatic Munich Security Conference, Europe’s leaders could not agree among themselves on any new common position. For Europe’s pro-Ukraine commentariat, this is nothing short of a nightmare. They, as well as most European leaders, have spent three years ignoring or outright denying every sign that the West is unable to defeat Russia in Ukraine. At every juncture, they wanted to spin the roulette wheel of escalation “just one more time” to weaken Russia.

KEYWORDS:
Since 1991 NATO has played an important roll in maintaining the stability of Western Europe. That role has nothing to do with Russia. Russia had never attacked nor threatened to attack NATO since 1991. After eight years of extreme provocation, Putin was forced to react to CIA/USAID outrages in Donbas.

The important peacekeeping role that NATO has played since 1991 has been to keep our fratricidal Euroweenie “allies” from each other’s throats. If the Poles are smart, they will join a neutral Slavic confederation with Ukraine, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania.

The de industrialized Germans will not even attempt to rearm conventionally. The Germans will have nukes and wary eyes for both France and Poland in five years.

Except Hungary and Romania aren't Slavic countries.

Ukraine has NOTHING in common with Poland, Hungary and Romania. Poland, Hungary and Romania fought for their freedom. Ukraine is half-brothers with Russia and needs to figure out its own peace with Russia, along with the Russian-Ukrainian weirdness.

They’ll make an exception. How do you see it playing out? The European Pax Americana was only a short pause in the Euroweenie 1500 Year War.

You are absolutely right! Thank you for making my point. When they are forced not to kill each other by either their Soviet masters or their DC masters they live peaceably. When they try deal with each other without supervision, it’s back to killing each other.

They need some type confederation, alliance, something, otherwise, it’s back to the same never ending fratricidal war that’s been going on since their Roman masters left.

After eight years of extreme provocation, Putin was forced to react to CIA/USAID outrages in Donbas.

Come on. Putin longs for the old Soviet glory, and invading Ukraine twice only affirmed the premise of NATO as being warranted to deter Russia. Corruption abounds in both countries and Zelensky's alignment with Western liberal morality* in seeking their favor is suicidal.

However, only one country (outside China) is at present an ongoing military threat to the US (and has wicked allies: China, Iran, etc.), and with whom the US has fought proxy wars for over 70 years, flowing from an alliance with wicked Stalin and material aid given in that interest.

An overthrow of Putin, could ideally, enable Trump to help rebuild Russia as an ally of the US. Which opportunity I think the US missed in the 90's, taking advantage of Russia's weakness, while the pervading culture of corruption (and Russian mafia) enabled the rise of Putin under the premise of MRGA.

However, all are fighting against God/have mercy.

*liberal abortion laws and in 2019, Zelensky commented “Leave those people [the LGBTQ community] alone, for God’s sake,” which is the opposite of God, though as yet same-sex couples are explicitly banned from adoption and there are no legal grounds for same-sex marriage and civil partnerships in Ukraine, but in December 2022, the Ukrainian Parliament unanimously passed a bill that banned hate speech and discrimination against LGBTQ people in mass media. The provision was included in the media regulation bill, which was one of the main requirements for approval of Ukraine’s EU candidacy status. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBTQ_rights_in_Ukraine)

Germany will never be allowed to have nuclear weapons. Never.
