‘Fog of war’: Kentucky Republicans brace for potential 3-way race for US Senate in 2026
McClatchyDC ^ | 2/13/2025 | David Catanese

Andy Barr would begin with a federal campaign account affording him millions of dollars but have to confront the reality that he’s little known to most of Kentucky.

Daniel Cameron could ride the familiarity of having run statewide twice but carries the scars from his humbling loss in the governor’s race.

And Nate Morris would occupy the outsider’s lane of a non-politician but soon find himself answering questions about his stewardship of a Lexington company now struggling financially.

Kentucky’s senior senator, Mitch McConnell, has yet to verbalize his expected exit from the U.S. Senate in 2027, but that hasn’t stopped would-be aspirants from beginning to maneuver for what Kentucky Republicans expect to be an open seat three-way GOP primary clash in the 2026 campaign cycle. Hovering over it all is the singular force of President Trump and whether he can be coaxed into endorsing one of the candidates by a circling swarm of influencers.

“The Vance team and much of their consulting class is trying to circle the wagons around Nate Morris,” noted a Washington-based Republican Senate strategist who is unaligned in the contest and agreed to speak on background in exchange for anonymity. “But that doesn’t extend to the president as of yet. You’re talking about three people who are going to be strong allies of the president. Is there enough fog of war here to keep the president neutral?”

I don’t like the idea of having open House seats even in a supposedly “safe” district when the House itself is so narrow in its majority - it was not that long ago that Barr himself was barely able to win that district though it has trended further red. It is an off year election...anything is possible.

Daniel Cameron himself would be strong but for him running so recently for governor - fundraising would probably come much easier since this is a US Senate race vs. governor race that seemed quixotic against an incumbent governor with a 65%+ approval rating, but he could still be seen this soon as an “also ran.”

Nate Morris would be a fresh face, but there is the issue of the company he founded currently not doing so hot, even though he has not been the CEO of it for some time. As the article mentions he is closely associated to Vance...who is the heir apparent to lead the GOP nationally.

The Turtle has a huge war-chest, which will allow him to financially support the candidate of his choosing. Assuming the Turtle doesn’t run, any prediction on who he’ll support to fill his seat?

At this point, McConnell has really become irrelevant. Which is not something that could have been said even 1 year ago. He has faded fast.

Prediction- the Turtle will wage his usual sabotage effort to ensure a Dem takes his seat.

Problem forming? It’s a new RNC and they are on to him, bigly.

Here’s DTJ commenting on a short Nate Morris video. I know nothing more about him, but I like this. Worth checking out the vid.

It would probably be best if Cameron waited to run again when the governorship is an open seat.

Nationally, we need to be very wary of Beshear - he seems very Clintonian and could come out of nowhere. Ignoring that governor’s race and leaving him on the Dem bench was very unwise of the GOP / conservatives nationally. He clearly could have been defeated with adequate resources and attention given to the race...but everyone believed Beshear was supposedly “unbeatable” with his 65%+ approval rating that was earned by misleading people as to his philosophy and successfully hiding his ultra-left ideology.

I took a look at saw this.

Morris married Jane Mosbacher on New Year's Eve 2011. She is the daughter of Robert Mosbacher Jr., the head of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation under George W. Bush, and granddaughter of George H. W. Bush's commerce secretary Robert Mosbacher Sr.

Overseas Private Investment Corporation ?? That sounds swampy.

Oh, yeah USAID all the way.

That could be what, nothing, eh ? Father in law is a swamp monster, could happen to anyone.

“Prediction- the Turtle will wage his usual sabotage effort to ensure a Dem takes his seat.”

If he is going to sabotage he had better move quickly because he is in the checkout line and will not last the year.

I got a better idea. He’s very young politically speaking. Trump nominates him to SCOTUS this year replacing Clarence Thomas. Watch the left react. He’s already shown his conservative bonafides so we don’t have to worry about him doing a John Roberts on us.

Okay as long as it is multiple RINOs to just one, really strong, patriot candidate.
