One day after Vice President JD Vance delivered a scathing speech to European leaders in Munich, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz took the same stage to offer an apparent rebuke to Vance’s remarks, defending Germany’s democracy and its regulations on hate speech.
Scholz spoke at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, slamming “outsiders intervening in our democracy, in our elections, in the democratic formation of opinion in favour of this party,” especially from “friends and allies.”
Scholz said Germany’s “commitment to ‘never again’”—a promise to not return to fascism and the Holocaust—“cannot be reconciled with support” for Alternative for Germany (AfD), the country’s far-right party that is rising in support and has been propped up by billionaire Elon Musk.
In an apparent response to Vance’s claim that European leaders suppress free speech, Scholz said, “Free speech in Europe means that you are not attacking others in ways that are against legislation and laws we have in our country”—referring to German hate speech laws.

I’m getting really tired of this “our Democracy” talk.
Look pal, you can’t have your “Democracy” without free speech.
Sounds more to me like you’re talking about communism.
Vance’s whole point is that they’re hardly a democracies when they’re canceling elections in Romania (or making them having no consequence in France’s case)
If Germany is such a “democracy,” why can’t they stand a little criticism? Open debate is one of the features of “democracy”, and the German chancellor’s reaction tells us all we need to know about his trajectory.
Touche.

System in which you do and vote exactly as instructed by left-liberal Democratic media and political establishment.
As long as we have military bases in Germany we are not outsiders.
“Ami… Ami….. Ami..”
The restriction of speech without a clear and legally proscribed definition of whatever it is that "hate speech" is rates a laugh and a jeer.
But it's fine, because Olaf won't be chancellor much longer.....
Those Germans, they sure do love their authoritarianism.
“’Free speech in Europe means that you are not attacking others in ways that are against legislation and laws we have in our country’—referring to German hate speech laws.”
Sooo... NOT free speech.
First they came for the Neo-Nazis.......
A centrally planned economy top-heavy with failed progressive policies, with crippling taxes for ‘green’ reasons and foreigners replacing native Germans is hardly a ‘democracy’.
It's a German thing.
JD Vance’s speech was also geared toward the people of Europe, not just the government and NATO leaders. I am sure he deliberately stirred up the honest nests so it triggered discussions among European themselves.
When things cool off and settle a bit, hopefully they will start to see the merits of Vance’s speech. In any case, that speech will be remembered as one of the most important speeches in 21st century.
They can have what they want. But they can’t expect us to pick up the expense for defending it.
You mean like we did in the early ‘40’s, Sgt. Scholz?
What they mean by OUR Democracy are the institutions created since 1945 to make sure that voting can’t change anything.
Yo Olaf, you blathering putz!
We had to “intervene in your democracy “ 2x in the last century, and have been propping up your bucolic little dorf ever since.
You might try NOT crapping in the hand that protects your worthless azz!
Dear VP, Tell the Germans to watch us close every single base in Europe. According to my program, here is the amount of money we spend in the German Nation. For example, in 2020, the U.S. Department of Defense estimated it spent around $8 billion on its military presence in Germany. This figure includes the costs associated with maintaining bases, housing, and other facilities and the salaries and benefits of military personnel and their families.
