Germany's defense minister criticized President Donald Trump for what he called "regrettable" concessions to Moscow, after the president unilaterally announced an immediate start to direct peace talks with President Vladimir Putin to end the Kremlin's war on Ukraine.
Trump said in a post to social media on Wednesday that he spoke with Putin by phone, adding the two leaders "agreed to have our respective teams start negotiations immediately" to end the fighting in Ukraine after nearly three years of Russia's full-scale invasion.
Trump's announcement came shortly after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told allies that Ukraine cannot liberate all territory occupied by Russian forces and will not be given NATO security protection as part of any peace deal.
NATO ministers quickly pushed back. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said it was "regrettable" that "the Trump administration has already made public concessions to Putin before negotiations have even begun."

Germany has committed suicide by embracing the Green agenda. We really don’t give a damn what you think. Your country is not gonna exist in about five years.
We lived in Germany for a few years in 1999. We loved it, wonderful people, wonderful history, a beautiful country. We saw the changes starting to happen during our first visit to Paris in 2001 as we watched muslim migrants try to ruin one of the famous obelisks in the city. We had no idea how bad it would get then.
When we moved back home in 2004, we promised ourselves we would be back and would miss being there.
Not anymore.
Yep. Peace was always going to come between Trump and Putin.
Zelensky was always just a fly on the Wall.
If Germany and other EU Countries want to continue the War with Putin,
have at it.
You can bet Zelensky is looking for an exit Strategy with his pallets of
American cash, as his NAZI Solders are looking to string him up.
Noted Herr Minister. Still your move.
Simple. Let Europe officially ask President Trump to not be in charge of the negotiations. Let the EU lead in them. Simple. We can stand down, and then THEY can not make any concessions they don't want to make.
So easy to criticize....
So hard to rally the German troops to officially ally with Zelenksy's government, and enter as combatant into the land war in Europe.
Ditto all the other European nations so willing to criticize, and so unwilling to act on their own.
It deliberately reduced its military to almost nothing and slow-walked aid to Ukraine. Despite Scholz's talk of significantly boosting it's defense spending after 2022, it has done nothing significant to approach the previous 2% NATO commitment, let alone higher spending now demanded by the US and Eastern Europeans (Poland will spend 4% GDP this year, 5% next). Scholz withheld a billion Euros or more in military assistance for Ukraine already approved by the Bundestag in December.
As much as they complain about Orban and Fico, Russia's real ally in Europe has always been the SPD, which has combined sanctimonious appeals to "peace" while getting Russian payoffs since Brandt.
Germany can stick it in their sauerkraut.
Heh, it just gets better and better. I’m on happiness overload just from this morning’s list of news.
Germany and France are making alot of noise about a peace deal.

The Unite States is probably 200+ billion in Cash, and 70 billion in weapons, plus states individual donations. Germany and France together probably don’t make 10% of that.
Maybe, just maybe, if Germany and France had listened to Trump in 2016 they could have supported Ukraine to defend and recapture lost territory. Maybe, just maybe, if European nations had met their NATO obligations Putin wouldn’t have invaded. We wouldn’t have had a war, or Vlad the Invader to negotiate with.
LOL.
Germany wants to fight Putin until the last American dollar. Trump is right to pull out 20,000 troops and make the euro trash pay for the rest.
PAY BACK WHAT YOU OWE US, DEADBEATS.
This is the way it was ALWAYS going to end. It was as predictable as the sun rising.
Agreeing to meet with Putin in Saudi Arabia is a concession?
Conversing was a concession.
It took those idiots 94 years to pay their WWI reparations. Hitler suspended the payments during his takeover, thinking he'd be conquering the world. Germany and the rest of Europe never learned any lessons after two World Wars.
LOL!! And we all know that Europe knows best.
/sarcasm
Nuland, Sullivan, Blinken, Clinton, Biden have all brought this mess about. Trump said he would end it, talks are a start.
