Unpacking Claim That 75% of Farm Workers Didn't Go to Work Due to Immigration Raids in CA City(Didn't happen)
Snopes via MSN ^ | 1/28/2025 | Laerke Christensen

On Jan. 21, 2025, one X user wrote (archived): "75% of immigrant farm workers didn't show up yesterday in Bakersfield because of fears of ICE raids under the new presidency. America's rural and agricultural regions will be the hardest hit from Trump's immigration policies. Food prices are going to skyrocket."

Though the raids took place during the Biden administration in the week starting Jan. 6, according to Californian news media outlets, posts like the one above continued to circulate after Jan. 20, when President Donald Trump was inaugurated, and incorrectly attributed the raids and the resulting alleged worker absences to Trump.

However, there was no credible evidence from other news reports to corroborate Creamer's 75% estimate either on Jan. 9 (when he provided the quote to CalMatters) or since that date.

BP carried out "Operation Return to Sender" in Bakersfield in early January, according to local officials, making at least 78 arrests (archived).

Elizabeth Strater, national vice president of UFW, said:

I talked with contacts in citrus harvest and almond/pistachio/wine grape pruners in Kern County about this claim. This claim is not accurate.

There was no day where 75% of workers stayed home. The fear and anxiety is significant, people are downright terrified, but they still need to feed their families. An industrywide absence of 3/4 of the labor force did not occur.

The date is supposedly happened was January 6th.

Snopes cannnot corroborate

Besides the obvious lie, they would still have pay rent, utilities and food for their families

Opportunity knocks …
Prisoners
Unemployed
Homeless
Not that I believe anything the media says mind you.
Migrant workers with the correct paper will continue to do these jobs. No problem.

I pretty much just eat meat raise by a local farmer. So I am not worried to much.

Maybe work on getting the work permits to be in the USA instead of flaunting the laws of the USA for your gain.

I live in a small city in Eastern Washington that has a Hispanic population of 90%. Back in the day these folks came in to pick fruit and work the fields. They settled in and had families, and their kids went to school and got other jobs so much so that the farmers now import migrants to work the fields and then send them back at the end of harvest.

I don't want to hear liberals say a d@mn word about the cost of food skyrocketing after they put in power that corrupt, senile imbecile who caused *MASSIVE* amounts of inflation.

Liberals! Shut up about what your stupid @$$es think about Trump causing inflation. We already had your guy who bungled it horribly, and no one can do worse than that idiot.

The usual fear mongering based on hypotheticals.

If I hear someone freaking out about what’s *going to happen* because Trump yada, yada, yada, I’ll just tell them that. Not interested in hypotheticals. I’ll deal with it IF it happens.

If 100% of illegal farm workers didn’t come to work because they were afraid of ICE that would be a good thing.

Journalist, teachers, professors, historians and certain others are so preponderantly leftist that you have to allow for the Leftist rule that truth must always give way to the “good.”

A GD lie. As far as farm labor goes. These people work under “farm visas” green cards.
In the southern AZ area, Yuma, they are Mexican laborers who stay through the harvest to pick produce for the market. There, as well as southern CA produces over 90% of the green veggies consumed nationwide.
These people dislike these border hoppers from other countries entering illegally.
IF ONE IS FOUND, on the harvest crew without proper documents-illegal, the WHOLE FIELD GETS CONDEMNED AND DESTROYED.
This dam urban legend that illegals harvest these crops needs to end.

If a hopper jumps the border and SHITS in a produce feild, that feilds produce is destroyed..its contaminated. Even if garbage is dumped by these hoppers is found in thise feilds, that feilds crops can be condemned.

These farm laborers work on those feilds and return home, mostly in Mexico, and live a pretty good life there even with minimum wages paid.

And they are mostly very good workers
Just wish they’d learn English though.

Yep

H2 visas

Besides, we have no way to replace 55,000 workers...

This is the time of the year they go home to vacation in the warmer climates if their birth. Not a lot to harvest this time of year.

I think that is the way it was done back in the ‘60s.
They called the temporary workers “braceros”.

Bakersfield farms should start hiring legal residents and americans. Perhaps offer better wages if no one else applies.

I think Hofman’s approach is Great! first get rid of all the murderers, while at the same time saying, hey after we are done, we will come after you. This gives the illegals time to think about what they are doing and do an orderly self deportation and leave.

Ive had people who travel through the Yuma area and saw feilds where the crop was left to rot.
They couldnt understand why untill i told them that, most likely a illegal was found on the crew, or somebody took a healthy dump in the feild and it was condemned.
Now guess what? That farmer has crop insurance. Guess who subsidizes that crop insurance? Oh, the farmer pays for some. But it nearly never covers the loss.

I would really like to see the monetary loss of crops from illegals causing it.

Huh? Where you from?
Harvests are in full swing right now in Southern AZ and some of CA.

Shut those areas down and we’ll see NO, green vegetables on the stores...unless you wanna eat produce brought in from southern countries where the food safety standards are lax.

Ya, probably not.

I do know that a little village near me normally has a bunch of aliens wandering about. Recently driving through and stopping at a business suggested that 100% were at work or hiding at home which would be quite unusual.

Businesses...Ive wondered about this for a long time. Why is it that one little old caucasian/asian woman can select and purchase groceries all by their lonesome but it takes no less than 8 screaming young super macho Mexican men to buy a tomatoe? Is that just a Walmart near a rural area thing? They act like they were just released from cages. Most importantly, where do tiny ancient asian women get the strength to independently lift a tomatoe?
