Google will be updating its maps in line with Donald Trump’s proposed name changes.
Last week, Trump announced that he would be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and the Denali Mountain in Alaska to Mount McKinley.
In a post on the X platform, Google said it would follow their “longstanding practice” of abiding by U.S. government name changes.
“We’ve received a few questions about naming within Google Maps,” the post read.
“We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources.”
“For geographic features in the U.S., this is when Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is updated.”
“When that happens, we will update Google Maps in the U.S. quickly to show Mount McKinley and Gulf of America.”

Truly astounding.
And “Merry Christmas” will make a comeback too.
Great news
My Google map still show Gulf of ‘Mexico’.

Google said it will still be Gulf of Mexico on maps printed for Mexican consumption.
It's not without precedent though. I'm old enough to remember when we called a certain body of water in the Middle East the "Persian Gulf."
And then one day, without seeming any notice or fanfare, it became the Arabian Gulf. And we've been calling it by this name ever since.
RE: Google said it will still be Gulf of Mexico on maps printed for Mexican consumption.
Anyone is free to call it what they want. No big deal. And may the more popular term win.
Sorry, I just can’t get into this “Gulf of America” thing. It’s been called the Gulf of Mexico since the 1500s, I see no reason to change it. It sounds like PC renaming to me, just coming from the right.
They will probably do the same for that river that runs along the border--called the Rio Grande (big river) in the US and the Rio Bravo (wild river) in Mexico.
I still use Peking, China and Bombay, India.
Wiki is still calling it Denali.
“My Google map still show Gulf of ‘Mexico’.”
It is still the Gulf of Mexico till Trump renames it.
Not changed on Google Maps yet, but I’ll keep checking back.
Denali is no longer a mountain in Alaska - to say otherwise is denial...
“Wiki is still calling it Denali.”
Because the US still calls it Denali.
“Not changed on Google Maps yet, but I’ll keep checking back.”
Don’t bother till after Trump changes the name.
