Retroactive to 2023. Might be a nice check for people like me who worked government and private. Might even be able to buy a recliner and a new pot and pan...oh and a dozen eggs
Who can be against a bill with ‘Fairness’ in its title?
Hmm...with the price of eggs these days maybe not the eggs.
By the time they get it, they can buy a McDonald’s Happy Meal............
The Social Security Administration, in an update to its website on Friday, said the department does not currently have the funding to execute the adjustments “in a timely manner and without negatively affecting day-to-day customer service.”
Acting Commissioner Michelle King was appointed 21 January 2025. She is a Trump appointee.
My wife spent over 20 years in the private sector, stayed home with the young kids for close to 8 years, then ended her career working for the school district. The SS system took away much of the SS benefit she put away during those first 20 years. She got royally screwed by the reduction.
So this “Fairness” is just paying her what she contributed to the system in the first place. I call that “fair.” She will get a significant increase in her monthly SS check and retroactive SS money for 2024. This is bad news it will take them a year to process these.
Hmm...with the price of eggs these days maybe not the eggs.
‘’’’’’’’’’
Whom. I didn’t know chicken squatting had gone up.
“...SSA expects that it could take more than one year to adjust benefits and pay all retroactive benefits.”
I’m sure that the government will pay us the necessary fines, penalties, and interest for not paying us on time.
I’m pretty sure it’s retroactive to 1/1/24, not ‘23.
What is the Social Security Fairness Act and who does it help?
The Act was signed into law on January 5, 2025.
The Act ends the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO). These provisions reduced or eliminated the Social Security benefits of over 3.2 million people who receive a pension based on work that was not covered by Social Security (a “non-covered pension”) because they did not pay Social Security taxes. This law increases Social Security benefits for certain types of workers, including some:
teachers, firefighters, and police officers in many states;
federal employees covered by the Civil Service Retirement System; and
people whose work had been covered by a foreign social security system.
Learn more below about the steps the Social Security Administration (SSA) is taking to implement the law.
Will every teacher, firefighter, police officer, or public worker receive a benefit increase because of the new law?
When will a person see their Social Security benefit increase because of the Social Security Fairness Act?
By how much may a person’s monthly benefit increase?
For someone already receiving benefits affected by WEP or GPO, how far back might they receive increased benefits under the Social Security Fairness Act?
What should people do now that the Social Security Fairness Act is law?
What if a person pays their Medicare premium directly to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services due to the Windfall Elimination Provision or Government Pension Offset reduction?
How can someone avoid scams about the repeal of WEP and GPO?
What is SSA doing to tell people about the repeal of WEP and GPO?
What is SSA doing to ensure it can help people affected by the Social Security Fairness Act?

I think that the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) comments sound like they were written by a NON-MAGA bureaucrat interested mainly in increasing their staffing levels. Perhaps GOING BACK TO THE OFFICE FULL TIME WILL HELP THEM HANDLE THEIR WORK. I would think that for those affected persons already on the SS rolls with reduced benefits, changes in SSA’s FULLY AUTOMATED computation processes could be done with minimal manual actions (other than the system’s development needed for fully automating the necessary changes).
Trump’s staff needs to call whoever is currently running the SSA on the carpet to get the message. Firing some of the SSA senior staff may send a message,
“would ‘apply with respect to monthly insurance benefits payable under title II of the Social Security Act for months after December 2023.’”
Sounds to me that the retroactive payments commence 1/1/24. No?
“ I’m pretty sure it’s retroactive to 1/1/24, not ‘23.”
********************************
When I first went on to Social Security I encountered the counterintuitive (at least to me) way they define their payment months. The payment I receive in January is actually December’s payment due amount. So since this new law is apparently effective for “months after 12/31/23” it means the January 2023 payment which would have been timely paid in February 2024. Of course I think of the payment received in February as the February payment (silly me). So these changes are actually retroactive to February 2024’s payments.
“The SS system took away much of the SS benefit she put away during those first 20 years. She got royally screwed by the reduction.”
The SS calculation is weighted to give lower incomes a higher % return. WEP was designed to eliminate this advantage government workers had if they had part of their career out side of government.
I don’t know if I’ll be compensated for the 5+ years I spent on the DC Metropolitan Police Department. We didn’t pay SS taxes. We had our own retirement plan.
I’ve been gone over 50 years, and this is such a small amount that I don’t care about it. SpellCheck insisted on that comma.
Do you get a retirement check (however small) for those 5 1/2 years on the police force?
Oh… and how many years did you work in jobs covered by Social Security taxes?
I’m not linking all of them. But according to that yes. Some say Jan 2023. Probably 2024 like you inferred and the link said. Feel better now?
