Trump Strips John Bolton’s Security Clearance over Tell-All Memoir ‘Rife with Sensitive Information’
Breitbart ^ | January 21, 2025 | Kristina Wong

President Donald Trump on Day One of his second administration stripped former National Security Adviser John Bolton of his security clearance over the publishing of his tell-all memoir detailing his time in the Trump administration.

Trump on Monday evening signed an executive order that read:

National security is also damaged by the publication of classified information. Former National Security Advisor John R. Bolton published a memoir for monetary gain after he was terminated from his White House position in 2019. The book was rife with sensitive information drawn from his time in government. The memoir’s reckless treatment of sensitive information undermined the ability of future presidents to request and obtain candid advice on matters of national security from their staff. Publication also created a grave risk that classified material was publicly exposed.

To remedy these abuses of the public trust, this Order directs the revocation of any active or current security clearances held by: (i) the former intelligence officials who engaged in misleading and inappropriate political coordination with the 2020 Biden presidential campaign; and (ii) John R. Bolton.

Security clearances should be removed when someone leaves office anyway. I see no reason for former officials to have security clearance for life.

I had a couple of top-secret clearances in my career. When my work on those efforts was at an end, I was taken into a room and “debriefed.” There was a special book of slides showing me what I had been cleared on and I was told that I could never reveal any of those things. I had to sign the official secrets act. I was not even allowed to learn whether the things I had worked on had been completed or delivered. There was no further contact with any of that information. Why are these people still cleared to get material that they no longer need for the performance of their job?

I think those two clowns were part of the 51 “Intel Agents” that said the Hunter Biden Laptop was Russian disinformation.

If so...their clearance was pulled as well.

Good, signing that letter was reason enough to eliminate their access.

Good. When I left my former employer, all my clearances were dropped. Why, rhetorical, do these assclowns get to keep theirs? Maybe that should be the new requirement. You’re out of the job, you’re out of clearances.

Having a security clearance is like owning a money tree.

Many high dollar government contracts require security clearances. Former officials who have security clearances are paid exorbitant salaries just to be "associated" with companies bidding on those contracts.

Security clearances and restrictions seem to cling for a long time after service ends.

My late fiancé - a senior officer in the USAF - even 30 years after his service still had travel and other restrictions.

I heard Dan Bongino discuss it, and he said the ostensible reason is for people to serve a consultative purpose where it could take too much time to bring them up to speed in order to provide timely consultation without a clearance in place.

Note: this was not Bongino’s interpretation, it was the interpretation of those who defend the practice. I recall he decried it, saying it was a major cash cow for people who leave the government. Having a clearance brings in money.
