Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that the Russian president was open to meeting with Trump after his inauguration. Russia welcomes Trump's "readiness to solve problems through dialogue," Peskov said.
Trump National Security Advisor pick Mike Waltz has confirmed that preparations for a meeting between Presidents Putin and Trump are underway. "The preparations are underway," Waltz said in an ABC News interview Sunday after being asked when the prospective meeting might occur.
Waltz also said that a telephone call between the two leaders may take place in the next days or weeks. At a press briefing earlier in the week, Trump said Putin "wants to meet" and that his transition team was in the process of "setting it up." The format of the meeting is "to be determined," Trump added.
"President Putin wants to meet. He's said that even publicly. And we have to get that war over with, that's a bloody mess," Trump said, referring to the ongoing NATO-Russia conflict in Ukraine using Kiev as a proxy.
Presidents Putin and Trump had a summit meeting in Helsinki in July 2018. They've also met on at least four other occasions on the sidelines of international venues, and have spoken by phone 16 times or more. The outgoing president, Joe Biden, held one meeting with Putin, in June 2021 in Geneva.
In a statement Sunday, the White House said Washington believes any agreement on Ukraine must provide "security guarantees" to prevent the conflict from reoccurring.
Russian officials including President Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov have themselves pointed to the need for iron-clad guarantees, but for Russia, given Kiev's tendency to renege on agreements, from the 2015 Minsk peace deal, to the 2022 draft agreement reached in Istanbul, but left unsigned thanks to interference by NATO.

...and so it’s ending, the De-Humanization of not just Putin, or the Russian government, but Russians in general (at least in Europe). Now there’s an ADULT in Washington who is determined to clean up the mess made by Biden’s people, particularly in Ukraine.
Russia and Ukraine come to an agreement and then clean up the mess. Ukraine bombs the Belarus capitol-unfinished business unaddressed.
Did you ever stop to think that such a comment might hurt a Zeeper’s feelings?
Seriously, I’m glad there is a path to end this war and this Russia, Russia, Russia nonsense.
Germany wants to fix the pipeline, they are sick of tin-pot Zelensky and his endless wars. Time to dump the Ukes and end the war. Putin won in Ukraine and lost in Syria. We need to make peace and any thought of WW III.
I hope our President doesn’t make Pooty an offer to buy Russia or trade California for it. Oh Noeeees!
“I hope our President doesn’t make Pooty an offer to buy Russia or trade California for it. Oh Noeeees!”
I think, among other things, that Trump will offer to pull our troops in NATO back to the original Cold War borders, and, depending how the Europeans behave, possibly pull them out completely. That would certainly get Putin’s attention and likely get the war in Ukraine wrapped up, once and for all.
Bump
President Trump is NOT like Slo Joe the grifter.
The Germans want to ally with Russia? Where have I seen that before? Have we already forgotten that President Trump campaigned against that “pipeline”? Don’t expect a position to change there since he is America First and has no interest in Making Russia Great Again.
Correct. Biden’s handlers blocked new energy exports to Europe while President Trump has long campaigned for good job producing American energy to replace Russian energy in Europe. Don’t expect any changes there.
That sounds good to me. If Putin is really taking the losses that the far-left “media” claim he is, I don’t see where this Ukraine mess is getting him anywhere.
Trump warned Germans they were vulnerable to energy cutoff from Russia.
Ironic
Why would President Trump order a retreat of American troops from the nations of our NATO allies, including those units he created and moved forward to permanent stations during his first administration?
Day dreaming about isolationism is always more fun when a Democrat is on the White House. Now reality is here and President Trump is no Chomskyite surrender monkey. He’s never been shy about asserting US power where appropriate.
It will be nice to see our National defense and military issues being discussed again without it all having to be filtered by how it suits Putin, and instead for how suits America.
If this was 2016, the FBI would be prepping Logan Act charges against him.
As a full conservative my interest in the European war is in Russia, not in Ukraine.
“Why would President Trump order a retreat of American troops from the nations of our NATO allies, including those units he created and moved forward to permanent stations during his first administration?”
1. Because there are a MILLION dead people largely because of the NATO expansion.
2. Trump has few cards to work with. Any paper-only ‘agreement’ signed by the West is almost certain to be thrown out the next day, as we CLEARLY evident regarding Minsk 2. So that’s now off the table for Russia.
3. Trump doesn’t even want to be in Europe, or even NATO.
4. Trump is not going to fight Biden’s War, and ending it takes some REAL STEPS.
5. About the only other reasonable option he has is sanctions relief, but then that goes away with the next Dem that gets into office...so even that won’t work well.
The thing about pulling back forces in NATO is that if the Dems try to get cute, maybe in 2029 and start moving them eastwards again, Russia will have enough time to respond to meet them at Poland’s border...which is why it is the ONLY effective means of ending the war.
It’s really a shame for the Neocons, they are going to wind up in a FAR WORSE situation in Europe (in their sick minds, at least) than they were before gambling it on Ukraine. Bummer for them.
I don’t expect Trump will change his views when it comes to business. Private business or National Business. He will take the same approach.
