Capitulation: The Austrian Freedom Party Will Form a Government

DAWG.
Three days ago, when last we saw the victorious but beleaguered Austrian Freedom Party (FPO), they'd been relegated to the sidelines after taking the largest portion of votes during last fall's elections but had been frozen out of government by the other parties forming a coalition to block them.
...As with Germany and France, losers big and small immediately decided they wouldn't play with the party that had pulled nearly 30% of the votes cast or let the FPO 'win' at all. They moved to form a coalition to ice the Freedom Party out of government.
...Like the National Rally in France, all other ruling parties are uniting to keep the FPÖ out of government ...
These conspirators had been trying to get along since October in order to 'form' a government. But, as they actually had nothing in common other than their mutual loathing of FPO and losing elections, it turned out to be tougher than they thought.
...They've been working at the process of 'forming a government' in Austria since October. And it all blew apart today.
Talks on forming a new three-party government in Austria collapsed Friday as the smallest of the prospective coalition partners pulled the plug on the negotiations...
The FPO's Michael Schnedlitz, the party’s General Secretary, reminded everyone that they had been, in fact, the 'winners' and demanded that Chancellor Karl Nehammer step down immediately and quit stalling.
Nehammer and his remaining partners immediately kept stalling, trying to work every angle possible to foil FPO from claiming the victor's mantle and a place, if not the right to form, a new Austrian government.
In the face of that stubborn almost unhinged resistance to any populist party advances in Europe in general, this today was gobsmacking news.
Van der Bellen wasn't decent enough to keep the elitist sneer out of his statement regarding 'allowing' FPO to form a government. He had to fan those extremist flames one last time.
...After meeting with Kickl on Monday, January 6th, Van der Bellen said he instructed the FPÖ leader “to start talks with the ÖVP on the formation of a federal government. Herbert Kickl will keep me informed about the progress of these talks.”
The meeting on Monday marks a significant U-turn in Austrian politics. In October, the president went against political custom and declined to allow the victor of the September national elections, FPÖ, to form a government. Despite the anti-globalist party’s clear victory, Van der Bellen opted for the second-placed centre-right People’s Party (ÖVP).
As he did in October, the president once again signalled his disdain for the FPÖ by insinuating that the party could take anti-democratic measures once it enters government. Van der Bellen said he had not taken the decision to task FPÖ with forming a government “lightly.” “I will continue to ensure that the principles and rules of our constitution are correctly observed and adhered to,” he emphasised.
EVERYONE I DON'T LIKE IS A NAZI
The mainstream Austrian press is having what's termed as a 'meltdown' at the thought of 'far-right extremists' having the chance to form a government. Still, there are a fair number of volunteers willing to remind 'journalists' what actions of the Austrian government got them here.
These were retribution elections - 'never again' elections.
...Let me help you, then: because you promoted an insane Covid policy that significantly eroded the standard of living of the middle class, let alone of the lower middle class, and precipitated the level of inequality? Because you imposed insane mandates (the only country in the world to have made the Covid vaccine compulsory for all!) that rightly made the people furious? But hey, keep wondering.
When Austria 'came out' of lockdown, it was only for the vaccinated. You were still a prisoner if you hadn't been jabbed.
The same ruling caste who imposed the draconian COVID restrictions and threw the doors open to 'migrants' only made their situation worse by clinging to power these intervening months.
The Christmas Market massacre in Germany only served to amplify the urgency of the FPO's anti-immigration stand.
Where FPO had won in September with a tad over 28% of the vote, by Christmas, the percentage of Austrians identifying with the party had grown to over 37%.
Being threatened for not wanting a jab does tend to stick with you.
I mean, I'll never forget listening to fellow Americans being condemned by that cheerful old...POS...to a 'WINTER OF DEATH.' That's just for starters. And you'd best believe we thanked God every day we had a DeSantis instead of a Newsom or Whitmore.
The 'terrified of what's next' crews are out who were, I have no doubt, all big vax advocates, as well as diversity is our strength types.
I'm not sure they realize their 'the situation is absolutely alarming' message is pretty incoherent. What should replace failing and/or authoritarian governments, and why shouldn't voters be allowed to do so? Why shouldn't voters be expected to want to take their countries back?
That's what's terrifying these progressives - the thought that regular people have a voice. And have found it. That the people are using the votes to end this long, ruinous social and economic experiment.
'Far-right', according to this young reporter, means 'similar to Georgia Meloni in Italy,' anti-immigration, and anti-European Union.
Um...SOLD!
Personally, I hope Kickl turns out to be kick-ass, just like Meloni. That's what I'll be rootin' for.
Wouldn't that be something else?

Beege Adds: The parties can read the writing on the wall. OVP has already said they were open to working with FPO if they asked, so a government could very well happen.
...Austrians have had enough and are frustrated at seeing their vote being ignored by the political establishment. Since the elections in September, the FPÖ’s popularity has risen from 29% to 37%, while the ÖVP’s has dropped from 26% to 21%.
Nehammer’s resignation and a change in leadership within the ÖVP now pave the way for a conservative government to take power.
“This country needs a stable government right now, and we can’t keep losing time to election campaigns or elections that we don’t have,” new interim party leader Christian Stocker said on Sunday. He added that he had been authorised by his party to enter into coalition talks with the FPÖ if invited to do so.
The two parties governed Austria together between 2017 and 2019 until the collapse of their coalition due to a corruption scandal. ÖVP and FPÖ also make up coalitions in five of Austria’s nine states—Lower Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Upper Austria, and Vorarlberg—meaning they have much more in common than Nehammer wanted voters to believe.

Probably because it’s no longer on the minds of most people. What is FAR MORE IMPORTANT to a large and growing number of Europeans is Population Replacement and Energy Policy, both of which they see every day, and also the fact that the ‘mainstream’ parties have no interest in ending the Ukraine War.

“will form government” is too strong. “in position to form government” is better.
One possible new government is obvious. The Freedom Party and the Peoples Party agree to an independent prime minister and otherwise split the ministries. This preserves the Peoples Party’s objection to Herbert Kicki of the Freedom Party being prime minister. I’ll call this arrangeement the Netherlands solution because that’s how the Dutch conservative parties formed a government when Geert Wilder’s Freedom Party finished first.
Getting back to Austria, immigration policy and economic policy aren’t much of a problem as both parties have a lot in common in those areas. The two parties would have to hammer out a foreign policy, as the Freedom Party is Eurosceptic, and the Peoples Party Europhilic.
Austria isn’t a member of NATO and spends less than 1 percent of GDP on defense. This is similar to Switzerland except that Switzerland relies on an armed militia rather than a professional military. Perhaps Austria can continue its orientation (armed neutrality) and begin steps to emulate Switzerland’s version of a militia-like territorial defense force.
