South Korean police called off an attempt to arrest suspended president Yoon Suk Yeol after a six-hour standoff with his security team.

Yoon is under investigation for abusing his power and inciting an insurrection when he tried to impose martial law in early December.

The move, although short-lived, led to a political crisis as Yoon was impeached by an opposition-led parliament and suspended from office...

The operation started with a 20-strong team, but quickly multiplied to some 150 people. Even then, they were outnumbered.

The military and security officers formed a human wall and used vehicles to block the arrest team's path, local news outlet Yonhap reported...

There is a lot swirling around this the President is from what one would call the “Conservative” party in South Korea while the Opposition controlling the National Assembly, judiciary and so on would be considered the “Progressive” party in South Korea.

North Korea wins without firing a shot.

the first time an acting president had been impeached since South Korea became a democracy

BBC editors didn't catch this big miss by the AI reporter.

There have been two presidential impeachments in South Korea's democratic era.

Park Guen-Hye, the daughter of long-time and assassinated president Park Chung-Hee, was impeached, convicted, and removed from office in 2016-17.

And president No Moo-Hyun was impeached in 2004, but not convicted.

Basically, a ROK president gets impeached every 10 years.

I suspect our ally is being attacked in this war that is going on. This is them fighting the battle.

It seems we have all allowed the enemy in under the wire.

Yep.

What was that China said about winning wars? I think they said they would do it without firing a shot as well.

We lost a major battle in 2020. We’ll see if it is going to cost us the war.

Taiwan has fistfights in their parliament/assembly. They don’t have to kill to run the country. There are elements here that will do just that. Twice this election cycle.

IS she still in jail? I got the sense that it was wrongful imprisonment.

Yeah the US may have its military there...and South Korea is competent enough economically to stand as a nation with high living standards, but its toxic political and social conditions are why their birthrate is struggling. And catastrophes like the plane crash seem to expose the kinks in their hierarchical armor.

President Moon ordered former president Park released from prison in December 2021...She did have health problems in prison...
