Former Russian footballer who played against Ronaldo killed in Ukraine

A former Russian football star has died fighting for Putin in Ukraine, 20 years after playing against Cristiano Ronaldo at the European Championship.

Russian media said Alexei Bugayev, who was 43, was killed on Sunday after joining the army in September to avoid serving a 10-year prison sentence for drug trafficking.

“Unfortunately, the news of Alexei’s death is true. How did it happen? And how do they kill during military operations? It happened today,” Ivan Bugayev, his father, was quoted as saying.

Bugayev’s body could not be retrieved due to the intensity of the fighting, his agent said, although the exact circumstances of his death were not clear.

Born in Moscow, Bugayev made his debut for the capital’s Torpedo football club in 2001.

After making a name for himself as a tenacious central defender in Russia’s top flight, he was called up to the national team for the Euro 2004 Championship.

Ended up drug trafficking?

Geez, can we send our hard drug traffickers to fight for Ukraine? Would anybody mind?

Seriously I’m more interested in what’s going on with the wild oscillations in the ruble. Overall, it’s not dropped that much further recently, but the oscillations are something else. Cause?

Oh, it’s China’s intent. They’re the only winner in this war.

The Brits did that for 100 years. Actually a fair idea in a war of attrition.

...to avoid serving a 10-year prison sentence for drug trafficking.

Prisons in Russia must be pretty bad if you're willing to die in an effort to avoid them.

“… fighting for Putin…”

Note the contempt and dismissal of any concept of Russians fighting for any reason other than obedience to a supposed absolute dictator. It’s embarrassingly anti-intellectual, and spouting this garbage is a barrier to peace. Sad but that is how stupid so many people are today.

What other reason would there be for a former/over-the-hill/now-a-drug-dealer have, other than to avoid prison? Anther reason could be that Russia is running out of bodies to throw into the fight, so, forcing a drug dealer to defend mother Russia was Putin's idea. The guy was no longer useful for anything else. No doubt, Putin has taken a lot of prisoners and put them into the war too, and they weren't going to be welcomed back.

Patriotism. Desire to defend one’s homeland. Somehow our media and elites know that many Ukrainians have this but cannot grasp that most Russians do also. It’s a lot easier to dehumanize one’s enemies. Great method of control. Neocon 101

Fine, but, that's not what happened in the case of the soccer player.
