In hindsight, it might have been better to land on the dirt.

Wheels didn’t deploy, so landed on its belly and veered off runway.

Wheels didn’t deploy, so landed on its belly and veered off runway. It looks like it didn't dump enough fuel prior to bellying in - they might have left enough on board for a go-around if needed.

My error. It was landing.

That looked like a very good wheels up landing. Until it wasn’t.

It veered off and apparently hit something that caused a sudden stop.

Remember Al Haynes and United flight - no hydraulics and managed to land in a corn field. Lots of injuries and some deaths but not as bad as it could have been. He had a United pilot deadheading who sat on the floor of the cockpit helping him and the first officer to land safely. When explaining the problem and talking to the tower and getting directions from them to the airport, he asked, “does it have to be on a runway?”
