Residents in Seattle, Washington, plan to stop tipping as a minimum wage hike in the Democrat-run city looms.
The city’s minimum wage is supposed to go from $19.97 to $20.76 an hour on January 1, the Daily Mail reported on Friday.
Tipping workers on top of the approaching hourly rate hike does not appear to be a popular idea with some residents who have said they will no longer be shelling out the extra money for workers.
The Mail article continued:
One user who shared a Reddit post on the wage hike, which has picked up steam in the local area, said: ‘With Seattle’s new minimum wage going into effect really soon, most food industry workers are finally reaching a level playing field.
‘As a result, I’ll no longer be tipping more than 5-10%. And I’m ONLY doing that if service is EXCEPTIONAL. It’s only fair—hard work deserves fair pay across all industries.
‘Any instance where I am ordering busing my own table, getting my own utensils, etc warrants $0. I also am not tipping at coffee shops anymore.’

It’s a shame that they don’t recognize this is what most of them voted for.
The elephant in the room.
My wife and I have really cut-back on eating-out. With inflation, its hard to justify going to an average restaurant where the bill is $70 per person, and their payment screens then give tip options of 20% / 25% / 30%
So these people are “salaried” paid workers?! The minimum wage here in Alaska is $11.91/hr and evidently the cost of living here is 11% lower than Seattle. Crazy.
Best to be careful when declining to tip when ordering online.....never know when an unscrupulous restaurant employee may seek payback in the form of tampering with your food for not tipping.......same goes for giving your server a hard time BEFORE you get your food......it’s never a good idea. 😏
Note to Schulz
Stop with the tipping at drive through Starbucks. It is a pressure you put on the workers who are forced to do it to share with fellow workers- it’s a communist practice
The tip is collected before the service is completed making it not a tip but a coercion to supplement the pay you should be providing to these low wage workers if you think they need more
By th time I’m arguing for a bag for my $20 coffee I’ve already topped the little creep pretending he doesn’t know what a bag is.
Have a customer service training program and stop with this crap everyone HATES it.
Tipping needs to die, the menu should list the prices and labor should be figured in, we shouldn’t have the burden of having to be concerned about paying the employees, we just want a meal.
“..My wife and I have really cut-back on eating-out. With inflation, its hard to justify going to an average restaurant where the bill is $70 per person, and their payment screens then give tip options of 20% / 25% / 30%...”
Yep. That’s pretty much where we’re at as well.
In addition, the service and quality of food we’re experiencing nowadays borders between mediocre to just outright terrible. There are places that we used to go to quite frequently, we now will likely never go back to. It’s just not worth the money to go to these places and be treated like a necessary evil. We’ve cut waaaay back.
Better yet, quit patronizing woke overrated starsucks all together.
Personally, I’m still not gettin’ it.
It really galls me to have these Point of Sale terminals ask for a tip. They give you three choices: 15%, 18% and 20%. I’ve seen a few that even suggest more.
That pisses me off so much I am now not hesitant to tip 0%. If the person is courteous and hard working, I’ll touch the “Custom” button and tip about 10%.
The other day I tipped about 10% and the terminal then said something like “If you add $2 more, you’ll get up to 15%.” I couldn’t believe my eyes.
Whoever programmed those POS terminals with those suggested amounts is an idiot.
“its hard to justify going to an average restaurant where the bill is $70 per person...”
damn dude......where you been eatin’ at??!!
The obligation to tip shouldn't be there at most places. And I'll argue not even at Chili's because now you can use a kiosk to order a meal to your table.
But if you're going to Ruth's Chris Steak House, yes. There should be tipping so you'll get the best service possible.
Years ago when I often went to Italy due to family connections, eateries had a standard addition of 17% to their bill for “service”. If you liked the service, you also left a little change, like the equivalent of 50 cents. Leaving more was actually considered an insult!
The high minimum wage laws applying to everyone including high school and college summer workers, are insane.
And they cause enormous inflation.
Don’t complain to Schulz...he’s long gone. He was the chairman and CEO of Starbucks from 1986 to 2000, from 2008 to 2017, and interim CEO from 2022 to 2023.
You basically have to FORCE a zero tip on those screens....they built the software to not take no for an answer the first time or two......sneaky as hell to the point the of it could almost be considered theft.
“You basically have to FORCE a zero tip on those screens”
Yes. Infuriating, isn’t it? You have to find the “Custom” button and enter your amount there. i’m waiting for the terminals to tell me off after entering 0%. “You miserable cheapskate!”
“”””There should be tipping so you’ll get the best service possible.””””
If you are having to grease palms to get people to do their job when you go to their workplace, then something is wrong.
