AS VEGAS (KLAS) — The attorney for the man who attacked a Las Vegas judge said his client’s decision to plead guilty but mentally ill reflects both the seriousness of the case and his mental health struggles.

Deobra Redden, 31, pleaded guilty but mentally ill Thursday after Judge Mary Kay Holthus and her law clerk testified in his attempted murder trial. As part of the guilty plea, a different judge could sentence Redden to at least three years in prison.

As the 8 News Now Investigators first reported on Jan. 3, Redden, a three-time felon, was in Holthus’ courtroom for sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. As Holthus was sentencing Redden, he dove over the bench and attacked her.

Man pleads guilty to attacking judge after she testifies Man who attacked judge did not intend to kill her: … “We deeply respect the pain and trauma experienced by Judge Holthus, and we continue to express our utmost sympathy for her and her family,” Redden’s attorney, Carl Arnold, said in a statement Friday. “At the same time, we are committed to ensuring that Mr. Redden receives the appropriate legal and medical support he needs to address his mental health challenges. This plea reflects a delicate balance between accepting responsibility for a regrettable incident and recognizing the impact of Mr. Redden’s untreated mental illness at the time.”

Arnold also thanks the prosecutors “for their professionalism and willingness to negotiate this difficult criminal matter.”

Redden’s plea means he acknowledges what he did and the role his mental health played in it, Arnold said.

He deserved what he got and I can see why they want to protect judges from this sort of thing. This is an old story, but it seems like maybe his public defender was in old screwing him. Why did he plead guilty to attempted murder? If they weren't going to let him plead guilty to less than that, then wouldn't it have been better to go to trial and maybe the jury wouldn't think it was attempted murder?

Oh, I remember that story. He was called The Flying Felon!
He caught everyone in the courtroom off guard, and jumped over the courtbench, clearing it in one jump.
Seconds later, he was smacking the older lady judge around, yanking on her long black robe.
Finally, the Baliff (?) put his cell phone away and ran to the Judge’s aid.

Put him in a jail/hospital setup where he can get therapy until he has good control over his mental illness. He sounds like he can do well with meds, cognitive therapy, spiritual guidance, and tight physical monitoring...until the boffins can figure out how to fix mental illness..

Having been in a lot of different courtrooms since that incident, the overwhelming consensus is that her law clerk next to her was a boss. He didn't hesitate to try to protect that judge.

The actual courtroom security officer(s), on the other hand....

I just don’t understand why he pled guilty to attempted murder. What worse could he have been convicted of? The jury might not find it was attempted murder. Was he really going to be able to kill the judge in the courtroom with his bare hands?

Society should be protected from this serial attacker. He has been held competent and convicted for past aggressions. I would think a dark cramped cell is appropriate.

Do a Jack Nicholson, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” job on him...lobotomize him - and his lawyer.

Reported elsewhere:

“Court cameras captured the dramatic incident when Deobra Redden crashed into Judge Mary Kay Holthus. A man who assaulted a Las Vegas judge this year when he jumped over the bench and knocked her into a wall has been sentenced to up to 65 years in prison, according to his defense attorney.”
