Man ‘piggybacking’ BART gates leads to gun, drug charges

A man who was stopped by BART police after allegedly “piggybacking” the Civic Center station gates behind a paying commuter faces multiple gun and drug charges...

Martinez Guillory, 51, allegedly exited the San Francisco BART station gates without paying... After being detained by a BART Police Department officer, court documents said a search of Guillory’s backpack uncovered:

DA Jenkins announced formal charges Friday, including possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of ammunition, possession for sale of cocaine base and possession for sale of a controlled substance.

The SF District Attorney’s Office said this case is the first it has filed with an arming allegation since Proposition 36 went into effect on Wednesday. Prop 36 was passed by California voters in the November election and allows for felony charges and increased sentences for certain crimes.

Guillory is expected to be arraigned in court on Friday afternoon.

Instead of an oversized picture of handcuffs (I know what handcuffs look like) how about a picture of whatever the hell “piggybacking” is.

Following right behind someone going through a turnstile so you don't have to pay. We have big "no piggybacking" signs at work in secure areas you have to have card access for.

I don't know why the gates are at exiting the station unless the article is talking about leaving the station to enter the train platform.

BART charge is origin-destination. Your BART card/smartphone app is swiped at the turnstile to enter the platform and then again to exit the platform at the destination.

So people who jump the exit turnstile can mostly avoid paying.

One would think that a drug dealer could afford his own Bart pass. Bidenomics, I suppose.

Yes not too bright to be carrying your inventory and fail to pay the fare - doh!

I was skeptical of the new bart fare gates (most of the fare evaders would never pay anyway) but they have had the (intended?) consequence of eliminating many of the criminals and mentally ill who would jump the turnstyles.

You have to be a real moron to be rolling dirty and then openly commit a minor crime in public. I hope he has not added any spawn to the gene pool.

I always get a kick out of these idiot criminals. Like the guys who are driving around with 100 pounds of meth in their truck while a brake light is out.

Thanks. That makes sense. The public transport I've used has always been fixed cost for the ride at the start plus possible transfer fee payable to the driver to get the pass.
