Sir Keir accused of watering down Britain’s support for Ukraine

Sir Keir Starmer has watered down Britain’s support for Ukraine, the country’s former foreign minister has said.

Dmytro Kuleba said Labour had followed the US when considering whether to grant approval for Storm Shadow missiles to be fired deep into Russia instead of leading from the front.

He suggested the previous Conservative government had persuaded the US to be bolder in its support for Ukraine while Labour ministers follow the White House position.

In comments first reported by The Times, Mr Kuleba said: “The Conservatives were coordinating with the Americans but they did not restrict themselves to just following the Americans.

“This is the change that came with Labour. They took a position they would follow the Americans.

“[Britain] has to allow itself to lead conversations with the Americans on Ukraine, not only follow the decisions the United States are taking.”

He said his first “unpleasant” conversation with British officials came in September when the Government refused to allow Storm Shadow missiles to be fired inside Russia without approval from President Biden. Approval for the missiles to be used was eventually granted.

Under the Conservatives Britain was the first country to give Ukraine tanks and long-range missiles, decisions that encouraged the US and other countries to follow suit despite initial fears they would escalate the war.

None of this really matters and will not make any difference in the outcome of this war.

Nah, you need to save your side teeth to pull the pins out of grenades. Or so I’ve seen on TV.
