Apple and Google must prepare to remove TikTok from app stores by Jan. 19, lawmakers warn

Google-parent Alphabet and Apple must be ready to remove TikTok from their U.S. app stores on January 19, two US lawmakers said in a letter to the companies’ CEOs Friday.

The bipartisan letter came from two leaders of the US House of Representatives’ committee on China: Republican Representative John Moolenaar, who is the committee’s chair, and the group’s top Democrat Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi.

Last week, a U.S. federal appeals court upheld a law requiring China-based ByteDance to divest TikTok in the United States or face a ban. The app is used by 170 million Americans.

Separately, Moolenaar and Krishnamoorthi also urged TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew to sell the app: “Congress has acted decisively to defend the national security of the United States and protect TikTok’s American users from the Chinese Communist Party,” the lawmakers wrote. “We urge TikTok to immediately execute a qualified divestiture.”

Apple, Alphabet and TikTok did not immediately comment. On Monday, ByteDance and TikTok made an emergency bid to temporarily block the law pending a review by the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Department of Justice said on Wednesday if the ban takes effect on Jan. 19, it would “not directly prohibit the continued use of TikTok” by Apple or Google users who have already downloaded TikTok. But it conceded the prohibitions on providing support “will eventually be to render the application unworkable.”

There are web sites that will convert a Google Play store App to a downloadable .apk file.

Well... We just supported the first step in giving up our whole internet to the government. We are absolutely stupid as hell...

Gen Z is addicted to TikTok. Maybe they'll petition their Representatives and perhaps get a new bill to remove the ban.

The Supreme Court may be reluctant to get involved. They may see it as a political issue. Kavanaugh, ACB and Roberts may decide that the SCOTUS needs to stay out of it.

I wish this country wasn’t so nearsighted. Far too many times we trust our government when we just absolutely cannot. If the government claims to limit this to just TikTok and we believe them we are stupid and deserve to lose it all. Because that is exactly what they are going to do. NEVER has government NOT expanded controls on something once that door was opened because idiots supported opening that door.

SCOTUS NEEDS to get involved! It is a 1st amendment Constitutional issue that needs to be set in stone before it is too late to stop them from taking it all away. That is their job! I’m absolutely tired of them ducking the responsibilities we pay them to deal with.

Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch (I think so, he's usually reliable)

Not sure about Roberts, ACB and Kavanaugh. They may be afraid to act.

Perhaps they can treat their separation anxiety with medical marijuana.

DC says it is protecting the children in a bipartisan manner by banning TikTok. But they have no plans to block the Canadian porn giant Pornhub. And they have no desire to outlaw sex changes for children, or schools promoting the sickest perversions to young school children.
They say the ban is to protect America from China, while half of Congress has Chinese drivers and aides. Our universities are flooded with Chinese money and nationals. Our business leaders clamor to make money with China.

But trust DC, the Tiktok ban is to protect America and children.
