MOSCOW, Dec 11 (Reuters) - The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that Moscow was not ready to make concessions when it came to Ukraine and that President Vladimir Putin's own proposals on how to end the conflict needed to be implemented.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova made her comments in the context of a call by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to end "the madness."
Zakharova said Russia was ready to engage with the new U.S. administration on Ukraine, but had not yet received any serious, workable options to address what she said were Russia's legitimate security concerns and worries about the rights of Ukraine's Russian-speaking population. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who has been pushing hard for his country to be invited to join the NATO military alliance, responded to Trump's comments by saying Kyiv needed effective security guarantees.

What does that have to do with anything? The war will end on Russia’s terms now that Trump has been elected, as Trump is against fighting World War 3 over a country that already had him IMPEACHED once. THAT SIMPLE.
Not quite. Trump has already said that he will not abandon Ukraine, despite all the wishful thinking by the pro-Russian crowd. They always turned deaf ears to the statements that he would put pressure on Russia if it refused to negotiate. And Russia is in a weak position. It is running out of men and material, and its economy is about to collapse. Russia is in no position to dictate the terms unilaterally.

The only way to stop the loss of territory is for Ukraine to concede annexed territory and agree, as its constitution mandates, to be neutral country.
If that doesn't happen, Ukraine will no longer exist.

As to Trump not abandoning Ukraine (to Russia’s terms), about the only option Russia is giving him is starting World War 3 for the country that got him IMPEACHED, and if you think he’s ready to go there, you don’t know much about Trump.

The conflict started when Russia put pressure on Yanukovych to betray his electoral mandate and renege on the EU agreement. The popular revolt was in reaction to this. The "civil war" was started when Russia used surrogate local militants to seize Donbas. This was the real coup.

Donetsk and Luhansk have ethnic Ukrainian majorities. This has been pointed out so many times that you cannot feign innocence. As for the Ukrainian action, they were trying to restore Ukrainian rule over its sovereign territory that had been seized by Russia. They crossed no international border.

Ukraine passed the required law granting Donbas autonomy and was planning for the required referendum. It was Russia that violated the accords by not withdrawing its forces and by not handing over the border to Ukraine, both of which were required by the accords. Russia also blocked the planned referendum. This also has been pointed out many times but you continue to ignore it.

There was no peace deal in Turkey and the talks were halted by the revelation of the Bucha massacre, not by Boris Johnson.

This is the Russian position but time will tell. If this were truly about Russian security concerns it would offer to withdraw from Ukraine in return for neutrality. That Russia wants even more territory than it has already taken, territory with Ukrainian majorities, and also insists on forcibly installing a pro-Russian government put the lie to Russia's claims of self-defense.
If that doesn't happen, Ukraine will no longer exist.
Russia is running out of steam and is in no shape to dictate the terms of peace.

Numbers do not lie. Russia is loosing men and equipment at about twice the rate that it can replace. Their Soviet stockpiles are running out. The Ruble has collapsed and the civilian economy is being eaten by the wartime economy. You can whistle past the graveyard but it will not change the facts.

Weren’t Donetsk and Lugansk part of Ukraine prior to the war? I understand there are ethnic Russians in those area, but the area has been part of Ukraine since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The region voted overwhelmingly for Ukrainian independence in 1991.
There are also a large number of ethnic Ukrainians living in Russia. Does that automatically legitimize any claims they might have on independence?
