South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s government early Wednesday lifted the martial law he imposed during a tense night of political drama in which troops surrounded parliament and lawmakers voted to reject military rule.
Police and military personnel were seen leaving the grounds of parliament following the bipartisan vote, and the declaration was formally lifted around 4:30 a.m. during a Cabinet meeting.
Yoon imposed martial law late Tuesday, vowing to eliminate “anti-state” forces as he struggles against an opposition that controls parliament and that he accuses of sympathizing with communist North Korea.
Less than three hours later, parliament acted, with National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik declaring that the martial law was “invalid” and that lawmakers “will protect democracy with the people.”
The president’s surprising move harkened back to an era of authoritarian leaders that the country has not seen since the 1980s, and it was immediately denounced by the opposition and the leader of Yoon’s own party.
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the liberal Democratic Party, which holds the majority in the 300-seat parliament, said the party’s lawmakers would remain in the Assembly’s main hall until Yoon formally lifted his order.

What is the latest on the fiasco??
This is a pretty weird thing.
President didn’t seem to actually say what necessitated martial law.
The legislature voted unanimously against it, which if course includes the president’s party too.
Did he go crazy?
I JUST DECLARED MARTIAL LAW FOR MY QUIET RAILROAD TOWN.
In thinking this happening in the US, when one hears the “Trump will be a dictator BS”, all one has to ask is just who is in position to be a dictator? Is it a person despised by 96% of the federal workforce, the same workforce which would be required to carry out unconstitutional edicts against their own people, or is a person LOVED by 96% of federal workforce (think an Obama 2.0), and told to jail us conservatives?
Yes, we can become a dictatorship, but with the federal workforce what is now and likely to be for many decades, it will not be under a MAGA-type president.
Some Korean general whispered a quiet warning in his ear. WTH was he thinking!
There are issues in South Africa, but their government is so corrupt and incompetent that nothing will happen. If you have $$$ and political connections, you may even thrive down there.
So if we end up becoming an one party state, we would want to be ruled by a party similar to the ANC party.
“What is the latest on the fiasco??”
That its a fiasco. The President backed down and cancelled martial law. TBD I suppose what happens to him.
One too many of his underlings made fun of his name.
That filthy skank on MSNBC Nicole Wallace asked a patsy “What is your take on why he used the same term fake news which is a favorite slam used by Trump against objective journalists?”
I despise her.
If strawberry Fields declared martial law, it would be Marshall Fields.
Did an “objective journalist” bite her in the a@@ and then die of rabies?
Ha. Good question.
She is so sour I wonder if someone accidentally touched her if they would shrivel up like a mummy after she pulled the life force out of their bodies.
Well, at least Zelensky never backed down! Maybe the South Korean leader needs a little cocaine.
Kennedy, Biden, Wallace, all accursed names.

I don’t quite understand what all is going on there but it sounds like President Yeol Suks.
I think so.
FWIW, he has called it 20 years too early. North Korea will be able to conquer South Korea in a generation because no one in South Korea are having kids.
No doubt they’ll come hat in hand begging the U.S. to bail them out when they find themselves being overrun.
Perhaps our new President will take another shot at setting NK on a different course. No one else has ever tried and I liked his strategy of offering them a vision of prosperity and no conflict.
I do not know.
smells a bit of Fake news -like to me. I notice all the villains in MSM are loudly calling it a victory for democracy etc etc.
You know AP news, CNN, MSNBC. Etc. And my close liberal relative who is a great indicator of the current democratic message is calling it a miracle.
The SK PM or president (whoever) claims he has evidence of a NK plot.
Just a bit uneasy about the narrative.
PS saw what you did there 😆
