DACA recipients worry their protection from deportation won't last another Trump term

PHOENIX -- Reyna Montoya was 10 when she and her family fled violence in Tijuana and illegally immigrated to the U.S. Growing up in Arizona, she worried even a minor traffic violation could lead to her deportation.

She didn't feel relief until 11 years later in 2012, when she received a letter confirming she had been accepted to a new program for immigrants who came to the country illegally as children.

“All of the sudden, all these possibilities opened up,” Montoya said, fighting back tears. The Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program granted her and hundreds of thousands of others two-year, renewable permits to live and work in the U.S. legally.

But as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House, after an unsuccessful bid to end DACA in his first term, the roughly 535,000 current recipients are bracing yet again for a whirlwind of uncertainty. Meanwhile, a years-long challenge to DACA could ultimately render it illegal, leaving people like Montoya without a shield from deportation.

“I have to take his (Trump's) words very seriously, that when they say ‘mass deportation,’ it also includes people like me,” said Montoya, who runs Aliento, an Arizona-based advocacy organization for immigrant rights.

That’s odd, I’m worried it will.

There’s going to be a lot of stories like this for the next 4 years. Also a lot of pictures of AOC crying in front of empty parking lots.

I was in Tijuana several times during that timeframe.

We need to keep the good ones. Some of these folks are productive and good citizens here through no fault of their own. If they have done everything right- stayed out of trouble, gotten an education, and are working and paying taxes and being a good citizen why toss away the money we’ve spent? It might only be ten percent but particularly the ones that have gone into the service or want to be cops or doctors or other productive citizens, it seems like a resource we’ve already paid for and merely need to ‘edit’ out the leeches and criminals.

and if you would have came on a tourist visa LEGALLY and just overstayed illegally, you would be eligible for a Green Card. That’s what my wife did and after we got married we started the paperwork and $10K and 1 1/2 years later she had her Green Card...

If you enter Illegally, you NEVER qualify and must go back to your country for 10 years before you can apply.

So the illegal alien sob stories start up, right on cue.

We want to live ‘in your towns, and terrorize you! We want what you have!

Violence in Tijuana? Who was doing that?

Oh right…other Mexicans.

Well senorita I grew up right where you are. Spanish was almost unheard and your raza was a small minority. People left their doors unlocked.

Fast forward 50 years and now you are the majority, and everyone needs deadbolts and sidearms. You’re rotten families agitated, demonstrated and rioted to shut down US law enforcement as you accused us of being the devils spawn while you slurped up our money, schools and jobs. Our overlords happily complied! Wouldn’t wanna be called racist, now would they?

So you can just head back to where you came from. Since you made things the same here, you won’t notice the difference.

How many under DACA were deported during the last Trump Presidency?

Virtually zero.

As predicted, he hardly got beyond the "criminal" contingent of illegal aliens.

(Yes, I know, they're all criminals. That's now how Trump treated them, as I predicted in 2016:

So the net effect of Trump's plan, even if in the unlikely event it is actually implemented, is to blow off the systemic fraud in the name of supplying low-wage workers to his milieu of corporate employers. As I have said many times, given that Trump is in the business of building and operating casinos, hotels, and golf courses, the bulk of jobs he creates are for dishwashers, maids, groundskeepers, low-skill construction laborers... If anyone here thinks for one second he's going to commit financial suicide... So no, his plan is amnesty in all but name, and worse if the courts shut him down. Everything I've heard on this forum to the contrary is nothing more than wishful thinking unsupported by reality.

>> If they have done everything right... gotten an education

The “gotten an education” part worries me. Yesterday’s ten year old wetback is today’s bullhorn-screaming protestor (or, worse, woke marxist ESL “educator”).

Obama tried to get DAPA passed, through that Dick Durbin to amnesty the *parents* as well.
It failed. Democrats having failed at getting another general amnesty have been intentionally, openly breaking the law by claiming every single one of the millions they allowed into our country were “asylum seekers”.
That has always been BS. The time to start enforcing the laws begins soon. If any democrats get frisky, arrest, book, indict and try them.

The good ones came in through the front door. If you say 10% are okay and the person next to you says 20%, and the person on the other side says 5%, then everybody is right and everyone is wrong. The one constant is that they entered the country illegally. If they are productive and good citizens here, they can be that where they came from, where they actually ARE citizens.
