Viral general election petition soars to nearly 3m signatures as Keir Starmer faces crisis

A viral petition demanding a new general election over Labour and Sir Keir Starmer’s “broken promises” has soared to nearly three million signatures.

The Government swept to power with a massive majority in July’s national poll, ratcheting up a stonking 174-seat majority in the House of Commons.

But even as the results were declared, critics pointed out that Labour only achieved a 33.7% share of the vote – just 1.6% more than the party achieved when Jeremy Corbyn was comprehensively beaten in 2019.

Controversial decisions to cut winter fuel payments to pensioners and slap inheritance tax charges on farmers have soured Labour’s reputation in the eyes of many.

As a result, pub landlord Michael Westwood launched his “Call a General Election” petition on Parliament’s petitions website.

“I believe the current Labour Government have gone back on the promises they laid out in the lead-up to the last election,” he wrote.

By law, petitions on the parliamentary website that attract more than 100,000 signatures must be debated by MPs. A discussion is scheduled for January 6 in the House of Commons.

Watch the current government arrest all 3,000,000 petitioners. LOL. More popcorn.

Dissolving Parliament is one of the few powers the King still has. If the PM refuses to bow to the wil of the people Charles III would call for new elections.

We’re on the same wavelength. I was thinking “How long before they make petitions against the government illegal?”

How long before the UK press turns on Starmer? I am hoping they won’t be able to resist the blood in the water.

He’s already said he won’t call elections early - he’s got until July 2029 to destroy the UK and he’s going to do all he can to do so.

I did realize he has 5 long years before a mandatory election.

I’m hoping enough voters and consequently enough MPs turn against him to force one much sooner. I have no idea if enough UK press might join in.

Regular Brits need to stand against unfettered immigration, to include expelling as many ‘migrants’ as possible.

There’s Trump, and other populist movements here and there. In the UK, Farage’s Reform UK needs traction.

Why are they upset? He’s keeping his promises. He was asked about whether he would listen to Davos and he said yes.

Labour Party is far left.

The British voters are publishing the Tories because they're basically Labour Lite.

If they had kept their promises and governed as a center right party, they'll have remained in power.

--- "The British voters are publishing punishing the Tories because they're basically Labour Lite."

Quite so. The UK's party parliamentary system is indeed the method for keeping an electorate from being able to say something like "none of the above." Had that been on the ballot, incumbent Tories and Labour would have been sent packing at the same time.

One recalls our first President warned in 1786 of "parties" and party politics.

Who is naive enough to think that when they vote totalitarians in that they can petition their way out?

On the Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act 2022.

Note the timing.

I just loved this bit...

“...It does not envisage a role for Parliament in deciding when general elections are held...”

Say no more!

There is power in numbers.

Millions of folks in the UK now know they are not alone.

The petition is freaking out their Deep State.

I call it very useful.

It needs more signatures.

I never sign petitions because I think it gives an enemy a good list of who to go after.

I fly a Trump flag outside my house.

I've donated to Trump's campaign.

I don't have a problem putting my Jane Hancock on a petition.

That said, I suspect the UK will require, for once, that all the people who sign this one be UK citizens.

Meanwhile...

Labour refuses to cap net migration as 350,000 set to become yearly norm

The petition is now at 2.9+ million.
