Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) has for years been talking about her plan to "make 'em squeal" when it comes to cutting waste in the federal government. Earlier this week, in honor of the Thanksgiving holiday and Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy having been tasked with leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Ernst's office put out a press release, "Ernst Lays Out Thanksgiving Menu to Carve up $2 Trillion in Waste."
@SenJoniErnst
Reporting for @DOGE duty!🫡
For the last decade, I have been sounding the alarm on waste, fraud, and abuse and am thrilled to build off this work with @elonmusk and @VivekGRamaswamy. Let’s #MakeEmSqueal!
The press release further referenced the holiday from there, as it noted how Ernst is providing DOGE "with a buffet of options to eliminate more than $2 trillion in waste." She also chairs the DOGE caucus in the Senate and has been handing out "Squeal Awards" to highlight such waste.Â
On Monday, Ernst sent a letter to Musk and Ramaswamy highlighting areas to cut. "While you’re seeking 'super high-IQ small-government revolutionaries' for 'unglamorous costcutting,' all that’s really needed is a little common sense. If you can’t find waste in Washington, there can only be one reason: you didn’t look," she highlighted.Â
On that "menu" of what to cut includes the following:
"This is by no means an exhaustive list, and I will be providing many more recommendations soon. My team and I are ready to help you make some prime cuts," Ernst's letter concluded.Â
Ernst also shared her nearly two dozen ideas on how to cut out $2 million in waste from her X account, as Sam J. at our sister site of Twitchy covered.Â
This is just a $2 trillion start.@elonmusk, @VivekGRamaswamy, and @DOGE and I will be hard at work putting waste on the chopping block and carving up Washington’s bloated budget. #MakeEmSqueal— Joni Ernst (@SenJoniErnst) November 25, 2024
It certainly looks like Ernst has support for her plans, as Ramaswamy has also reposted Ernst's posts about her plans for DOGE and to cut wasteful spending.Â
Time for waste, fraud, abuse, error, over-regulation, and bureaucracy to end. https://t.co/7vNeLpo6CO— Vivek Ramaswamy (@VivekGRamaswamy) November 27, 2024

Is she going to vote to confirm Trump’s cabinet?
More important than reducing spend is to get the government boot off of our necks.
She’s full of BS. This is her competing with Tom Cotton for a Republican Senate Leadership role.
She didn’t endorse Trump until the very last minute and it was weak.
She voted last spring to send 100 billion to Ukraine.
Now suddenly she is a MAGA budget hawk and has found a way to cut 2 trillion, a third of the federal budget?
Sending a list to Elon and Vivek. She’s the rooster wanting to take credit for the dawn.
I met Sen. Ernst several years ago and felt she had a genuine interest in serving our state and the nation. I still need to find out how she voted for the senate majority leader.
Is she trying to take credit for what Musk and Ramaswamy are going to do?
Privatize non-classified administration functions.
We need a see-something-say-something Hotline for DOGE.
I saw an interview with her on Newsmax yesterday or Tuesday.
I don’t know much about her, but I did not get good vibes from her. Seemed self serving in an almost desperate way. No likey.
She’s up for re-election in ‘26 and needs something beneath which to bury her RINO record.
I don’t trust her as she’s too much like the rest. Problem: there’s no one else.
There needs to be advice given to the Government Accounting Office that does have legally funded enforcement and LE powers.
I’m surprised that shutting down Ethanol Plants isn’t on the top of her list...
Lincare Made Billions While Repeatedly Defrauding Medicare. Feds Did Little To Rein It In.
https://www.propublica.org/article/lincare-medicare-lawsuit-settlements-oxygen-equipment
Lincare, the nation’s largest distributor of home oxygen equipment, has repeatedly violated Medicare rules and probation agreements, victimizing ailing patients and costing taxpayers huge sums. The federal government has done little to stop it.
Trump needs to tell her what to do. Not follow her lead
Joni is obviously on a rebranding campaign after cozying to Mitch throughout her tenure. She may be a nice person, but a leader she is not, imho. Iowa’s elected National leaders were a disappointment this year and obviously didn’t want Trump as the leader of the republican party per their lining up for DeSantis explicitly and tacitly for the Iowa caucuses.
My sense is they cannot be trusted to achieve the nitty gritty of the Trump agenda. In the end, they will protect their special interest friends . . . and they do have many who will not align with Trump and will probably do everything they can to undermine him. In that sense Joni is probably making as good a political move as she can to get on the inside and undermine from there and take what glory she can.
Also, I’m sure watching Deb Fischer escape losing by a whisker in Nebraska wasn’t lost on her.
Yep... Deregulate. I heard Elon give an example of gov regulations using a football analogy. He said regulations are like the referees in a football game. He said there’s like 1400 regulations making gov agencies. That’s like trying to play a football game with 1400 referees. Every time you run a play you are going to bump into a ref. 22 players on the field and 1400 referees. It’s easy to picture and totally unfair.
