GOP Senator Blocks Promotion Of General Who Took Part In Afghanistan Withdrawal
Daily Wire ^ | 24 November 2024 | Tim Pearce

Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma placed a hold on the promotion of Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue that would have elevated him to lead U.S. Army forces in Europe.

Donahue is currently a three-star general who was nominated to become a four-star general by President Joe Biden earlier this month. Donahue was one of the top military officials overseeing the disastrous withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan.

Mullin, who was serving in the House of Representatives at the time of the withdrawal, tried to lead his own outside efforts to extract Americans from Afghanistan, but was repeatedly stymied by the State Department and the Pentagon. Mullin placed a hold on Donahue’s promotion after the Senate approved promotions for hundreds of service members last week, according to The Washington Post.

President-elect Donald Trump has promised to fire all senior officers from the Pentagon who were involved in the withdrawal, which resulted in the deaths of 13 American service members and the loss of billions of dollars in military equipment. U.S. military sites were taken over by the Taliban and thousands of prisoners, many with terror ties, were released.

Wow, someone in the bloated DC bureaucracy actually, possibly, in-the-future maybe being threatened with consequences for being part of political stupidity and expensive failure?

What a radical concept!

Can someone confirm that this hold effectively nixes the promotion of this general, because there is not much time left?

Markwayne Mullin is a complete grandstanding low IQ moron. General Donahue a woke morally weak moron.

This is a collision between two entitled morons.

I don’t know about this guy, but honestly, I would put a hold on all flag promotions via actions like this, until after January 20, 2025.

For two reasons:

First, I think there should be a top-to-bottom retrospective look by all flag promotions approved during the Biden years, if not the Obama and the Trump years.

Secondly, we need to cut back on the Flag Officer ranks. I have heard we have more Flag Officers right now than we did at the end of WWII. If so, that is shameful, and indicative of a need for reducing that number. I cannot verify that is true, but have heard it from multiple sources. If it is true, we need to prune those numbers down. If not true, we should still be doing a retroactive analysis anyway.

That's got my vote. Given the increasingly obvious propensity of the Dems to do as much lasting damage to the country as they can before Trump is sworn in, it's just common sense.

Can’t say ‘for sure’ but, above the rank of 2-star (Major General), the rank comes with the command-slot. So it’s my guess that Gen. Donahue can’t actually take the job unless the promotion goes through.

When Trump takes office, this Gen. Donahue is a goner anyway. If he is removed for ‘confidence reasons’ so soon after he takes over, he’ll likely retire a 3-star (his highest confirmed rank).

Democrats like to complain when their military appointments are blocked. But they’re perfectly happy to let the deputy commander carry the load while they argue about it. So I don’t really want to hear about ‘readiness arguments’ from them.

Exactly. The Leftists have demonstrated they are perfectly willing to ignite a global conflagration for either partisan political purposes and/or financial gain.

Salting the Earth of the officer corps in the military on their way out of power is both small change to them, and utterly expected.

Regardless of whether this Senator is an idiot or not, this analysis needs to take place. No sense in promoting him then having to do something to remedy that.

I know this General was only added to the team overseeing the withdrawal at a very late date. I would like to see the analysis of the withdrawal (which I assume IS going to take place) and what this General’s actions were.

There should be notes of the meetings.

If he was persistently against the actions taken, I would be willing to give him a fair shot at explaining his participation in that debacle, and judging him based to a significant degree on that.

If he just signed off, I wouldn’t approve him under any circumstances.

A message needs to be sent: incompetence will not be tolerated.

During 77-78, I was tangentially involved with six Nuclear Surety Inspectiony at a nearby Nike Hercules battery. In the rare event of a battery failing its NSI, the Battery, Battalion, and Group Commanders were relieved of their commands. The tense aura of pucker factor was pervasive.

IMO, the failure in Afghanistan was far more egregious and serious than a routine NSI.

Great comparison to the NSI. The Afghanistan withdrawal was many things. In a criminal law sense I see 13 counts of felony murder by those who improperly surrendered a U.S. facility with $billions of equipment.
