IRS Introduces Changes to Reduce Refund Delays, Combat Identity Theft

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced new measures aimed at reducing refund delays for some taxpayers while also strengthening protections against identity theft and fraud.

Starting in the 2025 filing season, taxpayers who file electronically can submit returns claiming dependents, even if those dependents have already been claimed on another return, as long as they include a valid Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN), the IRS said in a Nov. 21 announcement.

The changes apply broadly to all taxpayers with duplicate dependent claims, not just those claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit. The IRS said it will now accept electronic filings of Forms 1040, 1040-NR, and 1040-SS in these cases, eliminating the need for paper filing, which previously caused significant delays in processing refunds.

“This change will reduce the time for the agency to receive the tax return and accelerate the issuance of tax refunds for those with duplicate dependent returns,” the IRS said in its announcement. The agency added that this update will streamline the process for taxpayers and provide faster resolutions while safeguarding against fraudulent filings.

Wait! Is their goal to reduce fraud or to encourage it?

IRS employees will probably be selling IP PIN numbers like hotcakes.

Do you realize how many fake children are going to be created in order to increase tax "refunds"? Or how many non-custodial spouses are going to claim their children as dependents even though court Orders specify that the custodial parent has that right? It is going to be chaotic and introduce a lot more fraud in tax filings.

Use the link below to create an IP PIN or retrieve an existing IP PIN online. Need to create an ID.me account. This same ID.me account can be used to sign in to a Social Security account at ssa.gov. I have helped clients set up this ID.me account many times. Takes about 15 minutes. Need current driver’s license, state ID, or passport.

What if the IRS goes away entirely, by lawful means.

(IRS employees will probably be selling IP PIN numbers like hotcakes.)

THAT would be a felony and TIGTA would track them down.

I guarantee you that they knew who accessed President Trump’s tax return information in very short order.

Now as to why it took so long to prosecute that guy.......

IRS PIN numbers are unique to an individual taxpayer. They DO NOT have any possibility of universal application to any other individual.

Well, I tried to do this Saturday afternoon for a client.

You can get an ID.me account,

Just can’t get an IP PIN until Jan 6, after the IRS updates. They turned it off about 5:00 pm.
