In case you haven't noticed, it hasn't rained in New York in a pretty long time. As nice as that might sound like, the environment—and, in turn, New Yorkers—are feeling the repercussions of the unseasonal weather.
Following a red flag warning that lasted nearly a week—a forecast issued by the National Weather Service to alert the public and land management agencies about the potential for fires and rapid spread given the lack of rain and increased wind—New York State is now under a burn ban order.
The statewide burn ban will be in effect until, at least, November 30.
What is a burn ban? To put it simply, the general public is being asked to refrain from burning things in public given the increased fire risk that the current weather conditions have caused.
"This burn ban prohibits the starting of outdoor fires statewide for purposes of brush and debris disposal, as well as uncontained campfires, and open fires used for cooking," reads an official press release by the Governor's office. "Backyard fire pits and contained campfires less than three feet in height and four feet in length, width, or diameter are allowed, as are small, contained cooking fires."
Keep in mind that New York State residents are prohibited from burning garbage or leaves all year-round, so that's certainly out of the question at the moment as well.
Are certain areas in New York State more at risk than others? At the end of last week, the Hudson Valley and Long Island were at "very high" risk for fire dance. The Catskills, upper Hudson Valley/Champlain, St. Lawrence and Leaterstocking were a notch below, at "high," and Adirondack High Peaks, Lake Ontario and Southern Tier are at "moderate" risk for fires.
You can keep track of the various risk tiers right here.
Control is its own reward. Nothing else need be accomplished.
Yeah same weather here in neighbouring Ontario. No burn ban here as far as I know.
Its been raining in the NY/NJ area for several days now...and more rain is coming back today.
Darn it! Now women can’t burn their bras!
Hopefully it will wash all the scum off the streets.
Typical .gov—declare a drought during a day long rainstorm.
Lol.
Good luck burning anything outside today—in the snow.
“This burn ban prohibits the starting of outdoor fires statewide for purposes of brush and debris disposal, as well as uncontained campfires, and open fires used for cooking, burning of American flags or yourself in protest is allowed.”
LOL!
I talked with a friend who is a DEC EnCon Officer. He said their Region is ignoring this ban for enforcement.
We’re under a ban here too in MA. We did get a good amount of rain yesterday though.

Funny, MD just lifted its ban, been a month or more. Guess things just got dry up north, getting wet here.
Please dont give the Oregon witches any more ideas! We generally have localized burning bans here.
Interesting. I used to work with an environmentalist whacko non practicing Jewish woman from downstate whose husband was a tree hugger for the DEC. They live in a lily white gated community, vote for the “working families (communist) party” encouraged their teen girls at the time to march for BLM and against President Trump.
When she and her husband realized that DJT had won the presidency in 2016, they literally collapsed their own immune systems and were out sick with some mysterious form of pneumonia for months.
Here in “dry” CT we just got a couple of inches of rain followed by wet snow.
“Drought”?
Lol.
Snowing here in central PA. Last week I gave a homeless man enough wood to get him through the winter. You couldn’t pay him to live in NY.
Where’s that global warming that was so good to us last winter? The Thanksgiving Day forecast says freezing temps and possibly snow. :(

Lol.
It rained yesterday, 3 days after this article was written.
Geesh.
When I write “ignoring the ban”, it’s an “understanding” as explained to me for Officers of that region.
