The Kremlin fired a new intermediate-range ballistic missile at Ukraine on Thursday in response to Kyiv’s use this week of American and British missiles capable of striking deeper into Russia, President Vladimir Putin said.
In a televised address to the country, the Russian president warned that U.S. air defense systems would be powerless to stop the new missile, which he said flies at Mach 10 and which he called the Oreshnik — Russian for hazelnut tree. He also said it could be used to attack any Ukrainian ally whose missiles are used to attack Russia.
“We believe that we have the right to use our weapons against military facilities of the countries that allow to use their weapons against our facilities,” Putin said in his first comments since President Joe Biden gave Ukraine the green light this month to use U.S. ATACMS missiles to strike at limited targets inside Russia.
The attack Thursday on the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro came in response to Kyiv’s use of longer-range U.S. and British missiles in strikes on Russia this week, Putin said.
“In the case of escalation of aggressive actions, we will respond resolutely in a mirror way,” the Russian president said.

From the videos I have seen, the tests went very well. The warheads appear to have hit in close proximity.
It used to be believed that the Russian Missiles were inaccurate, so they needed very big warheads. It looks like that is no longer the case.
the next escalation would be Russian tactical nukes in Ukraine.?.?“
It will take more than what we’ve seen for the Russians to go nuclear. It is about as big an escalation as it gets. There is much the Russians can do short of bringing nukes in.
President Donald J. Trump to Withdraw the United States from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty
“The U.S. withdrawal pursuant to Article XV of the treaty takes effect today because Russia failed to return to full and verified compliance through the destruction of its noncompliant missile system—the SSC-8 or 9M729 ground-launched, intermediate-range cruise missile.”

This was basically just more “I can use nukes!” rhetoric from Pooty. Trump will NOT like it.
Splitting hairs, introducing nukes clears decks. It would take something huge to provoke Russia to that degree.
Putin should launch one at Great Britain for a better test.
Agreed
The Ukies can respond by basically doing the same thing: Another effective ATACMS or Storm Shadow strike in or around Kursk. Then, what does Pooty do? Fire off another of these impressive sounding expensive but actually not very useful with conventional warheads new missiles? Or does he do more, creating yet another escalation like the introduction of the Norks?

So, that's what you wanted? Well, you've damn well got it!

They gotta come up with a better name than “Hazelnut Tree” if they want to strike terror into the hearts of their enemies.
The geniuses who committed us are probably also responsible for our three-part strategery, which appears to be:
(1) Ignore the nukes
(2) Escalate, escalate, escalate
(3) "FAFO!"
Anyone actually expecting any of the 'rainbow and unicorn' results I've seen mentioned, is dreaming...
It is not a test if used against a nation one invaded.
“...the next escalation would be Russian tactical nukes in Ukraine.?.?”

My idea of a Russian tactical nuke exploded in western Ukraine, and allowing radioactive fallout to drop over Poland, lasted only a few minutes until Bongino suggested it on his radio program...

The “optics”, however, would be terrible for Putin both with Europe and at Trump’s negotiation table.
That would trigger Article 5. of the Budapest agreement.
Not to use nuclear weapons against any non - nuclear-weapon state party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, except in the case of an attack on themselves, their territories or dependent territories, their armed forces, or their allies, by such a state in association or alliance with a nuclear weapon state.
The democrats and neo-cons would slobber over leaving Trump a war with US troops committed.
