Trump to pick transition team co-chair Howard Lutnick for commerce secretary: source

President-elect Donald Trump will name Howard Lutnick, the co-chair of his transition team, to the post of commerce secretary, a source familiar with the matter told The Post Tuesday.

Lutnick, the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, had been widely rumored as a contender for the more prestigious post of treasury secretary but appeared to have lost momentum in recent days to hedge fund manager Scott Bessent.

The 63-year-old’s pending nomination was first reported by Punchbowl News.

As commerce secretary, Lutnick will be one of the key figures responsible for enacting Trump’s planned tariffs on imported goods.

The bitter rivalry for the coveted treasury secretary job saw different factions of Trump allies pushing for their chosen candidate.

SpaceX and Tesla boss Elon Musk had come out in favor of Lutnick over the weekend, saying he “will actually enact change,” while Bessent would be a “business-as-usual choice.

“Lutnick, when he was out on the campaign trail with the 45th president, often touted his resilience in business, and spoke about the tragedy of losing more than 650 employees — including his younger brother, Gary — in the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.

Elon wanted Luttnick for Treasury, and went public with it. Looks like Boris Epshteyn won this round. Musk may leave Mar-A-Lago now.

“ Musk may leave Mar-A-Lago now.”

But he doesn’t want to. That’s his new home now.

It’s all media driven BS. I don’t know the choices. I know Trump. He’s not getting bullied around. Trump Jr is also on the look out for snakes.

Does Melania have to fight Musk for Trump’s attention now?

Trump should watch out that Howard Lutnick does not do to him what he did to Bernie Cantor. Lutnick has some ugly baggage.

I believe I heard Bannon say on his program that Bessent is more in tow to hammer down on CCP differing on this from Lutnick.
