I think the increase was TO $2, which is something like a $0.69 increase from the current.

I am NOT suggesting either is acceptable. But I think the headline needs some clarification.

California kind of sucks.

As of 2023, California's total taxes on gasoline include:

Federal Excise Tax: 18.4 cents per gallon.

California State Excise Tax: 57.9 cents per gallon (as of July 1, 2023). This state excise tax is adjusted annually for inflation.

Underground Storage Tank Fee: 2.0 cents per gallon.

Cap-and-Trade Program and Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS): These add approximately 22–25 cents per gallon (estimate varies).

State and Local Sales Tax: Sales tax rates vary by county but average around 2.25%–3.0% on gasoline, adding roughly 10–12 cents per gallon based on an average gasoline price.

Using the minimum from above, the total is $0.919 per gallon, and I think that's low because the state tax just went to $0.61/gal.

Using your round numbers - a $0.69 increase from about $1.31 represents a 52% increase. Whoah.

Trump lost California by 20 points instead of the usual 30+. The people who know Harris best didn’t vote for her by as much as a usual Dem. Hope for California? Sadly, I doubt it.

For those who control California the rest of the state doesn’t exist outside a 2 mile zone from the beach.
