Trump May Try To Stop TikTok Ban From Taking Effect, Report Says
Forbes ^ | Nov 12, 2024 | Molly Bohannon

President-elect Donald Trump may try to stop a law requiring TikTok’s China-based parent company ByteDance to sell the app or face a ban in the U.S., The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Former Trump adviser and campaign manager Kellyanne Conway told the Post Trump “appreciates the breadth and reach of TikTok” and that there are “many ways to hold China to account outside alienating 180 million U.S. users each month.”

The Post also cited three anonymous Trump aides who said they expect him to intervene if it’s necessary.

Under a law supported by members of both parties and signed by President Joe Biden, ByteDance is required to sell TikTok by Jan. 19, 2025—one day before Trump’s inauguration—or face a ban in the U.S.

The law is currently facing legal challenges from TikTok, though, arguing it is targeted, unconstitutional and violates the First Amendment, and that it is “not possible technologically, commercially, or legally” to divest in the time given.

Kellyanne Conway and three anonymous sources. Right.

I'll wait for an official announcement.

Didn’t Trump at one time (2020?) want to ban TikTok, and the Democrats were against it?

That was before Trump found out that TikTok was MAGA friendly.

Some of the best pro-Trump short videos came out of Tik Tok. I’m not a Tik Tok user but a lot of good videos I’ve seen on YouTube and X (twitter) this election cycle were much more favorable to Trump than to the democrats were tik tok reposts.

I think Tik Tok has grown too big since 2020 for even the Chinese government to control and likely played a positive roll with the 2024 election for Donald Trump - helped conservatives much more than it hurt.

I noticed when Trump was working a McDonalds he urged the media to take pictures of the huge crowd waiting in line for the rally he was to have later in the day and he quoted “Tik Tok”’s “10,000 Trump supporters” waiting in line.

Tik Tok users helped Trump/MAGA much more than it hurt them and became the Twitter/Facebook of 2024 for Donald Trump.

That said, it may be a smart move for Trump at this point. He knows much more about social media than most of us because he lives it.

Tik Tok had become the new Twitter/Facebook of 2024 election and helped MAGA much more than hurt it this election cycle. Banning it at this point would be more unpopular with the people than if he banned Facebook.

I’m no fan of Tik Tok (I have enough social media accounts without having any more) but I agree with Trump on this and trust his decision.

I don't care about the platform's situation. My concern is who is rendering this information.

Conway and 3 anonymous sources. It's a simple thing to comprehend.

TikTok corrupts the culture. But so does all social media.

So let's have competition. That makes free speech more likely, and more likely that good speech will find a platform.

Better many competing trashy social media companies, than a social media monopoly.

This bill would end up giving the federal government draconian powers for censorship...look at it like The Patriot Act on steroids. The fine print and wording is not in our best interest.

TikTok corrupts the culture. But so does all social media.

You realize that if it was not for X and TikTok, Harris would have won the election.

We'll be getting all the news from CNN and Washington Post.

Oh. And we can go on Facebook.

Almost all Democrats and Republicans voted yes on it.

But AOC and Matt Gaetz voted no.

Funny.

Exactly!I don’t even use Tik Tok but could not escpape all of the pro-Trump videos coming out of TiK Tok because they were reposted on X and facebook via Tik Tok.

I think Tik Tok’s popularity may have surpassed Facebook (because of Facebook’s obvious anti-Trump bias).

TikTok collects information on Americans for the Chinese regime. That’s why it needs to be banned.

This is the difference between conservatives and populists. A conservative would do what is necessary here to protect our citizens. The populists worry that it will be unpopular, that millions of users won’t like them.

Which is also what the RINOs do.

You realize I was saying that TikTok should not be shut down?

But it’s still trashy and corrupts society, especially girls and young women.

My point is that if we did not invent new technology, it's more likely that the Democrats will have been able to consolidate their control over all institutions.

In 1974, Richard Nixon had to deal with CBS, ABC and NBC.

Today, he has the option of appearing on Fox News with Jesse Watters. Or he can post a video on X.

That was not possible in 1974.
