Maine CD-2: It’s a Ranked Choice Voting Disaster of Democrats’ Own Making
Ranked Choice Voting is causing chaos in northern Maine and Democratic strategizing in Augusta

Ranked Choice Voting was sold to Maine voters as a silver bullet that would clean up Maine politics, eliminate spoiler candidates, discourage negative campaigning, and have all kinds of other wonderful benefits.
Instead, the reality has been increased confusion, electoral chaos, and diminished trust in the electoral process. As evidence, look no further than the drama currently on display in Maine’s Second Congressional District. The guys at the Maine Policy Institute (of which, full disclosure, the Maine Wire is a project) did a podcast episode today covering the topic that’s worth listening to as well.
Yesterday, about two hours after the Maine Wire had already reported that it was going to happen, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows (D) announced a Ranked Choice Voting procedure would be initiated because neither Golden nor Theriault had more than 50 percent of the total vote. This was due to the large number (12,635) of “blank” ballots.

Although these are being referred to as blank ballots, I suspect a majority of them are actually overvotes which are recorded on the voting returns forms as blanks. They still need to do the recount to confirm this.
There was a "declared write in" third candidate which triggered this as a ranked choice race. Nobody even knew she was a write in. The voting report issued by the SOS shows she got 420 votes.
There will be some interesting games played in the next couple of weeks in Maine.
If Rube Goldberg designed an election machine, it would be Ranked Choice.
What would it be if something designed Rube?
They tried to get idaho to vote ranked choice in. We told them to FO.
I’ll bet the clothes on my back that the Rat is declared the winner.
By a substantial margin. The ads in favor of Prop 1 were deliberately misleading and infuriating.
That’s definitely what I was thinking as I filled in the “No” bubble.
+1
Fortunately, here in Nevada we told them FU 2.
I’m glad ranked choice failed in Oregon.
It’s just another way to screw up elections.
Any electoral system can be badly implemented. This Maine snafu seems most similar to the hanging chad disaster that cost Al Gore the White House in 2000. It says little or nothing about the merits or demerits of ranked choice voting.
Oregon also voted NO on RC...amazingly
It was on the ballot this year in AZ as well, and soundly defeated.
The Demorat was leading by about 3000 votes on the morning of November 6.
California has the top 2 primary vote getters compete in November assuring the winner will get over 50%. Same party most of the time.
The Central Valley is red but too many of the close ones are just that-close. Opens the door for rinos.
Who cares about Rank Choice Voting?
Why is it always on something other than the VOTERS?
Are the voters required by law to fill it out exactly as the Democrats designed to create the mess they want.
If a voter just votes for the candidate they want and don’t fill in #2 or #3, what happens? Ballot not counted? Go to jail?

NO

The ballot get tossed aside for subsequent rounds if there are no more choices made. It is referred to as an exhausted ballot.
The skipped choice piece may only apply to Maine.
I’m worried there’s something screwy with Alaska votes going on right now. Still have a bunch of prevents that haven’t reported anything. The proposition to get rid of ranked BS voting is super close because people are stupid, and there’s all the votes that haven’t been counted yet.
Something needs to change in Alaska. Being “remote” is an old and outdated excuse. There’s internet everywhere these days. It’s not the 70’s anymore.
So does this mean we have a chance to pick this up?
ranked choice is another way to cheat. win by what ever means is necessary. Another rat making
