A billionaire hedge fund boss is positioning himself to become Donald Trump's Treasury Secretary.
Scott Bessent - who previously served as an economic adviser to Trump - is currently vetting potential candidates for a deputy role, The Financial Times reported.
The news comes the day after JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, often called America's most powerful banker, ruled himself out of consideration for the role.
Although Bessent - who stirred controversy over his financial backing of a conservative publishing house - hasn't confirmed an interest in joining Trump's cabinet, he hinted at his willingness on Wednesday.
'I'm going to do whatever president Trump asks,' he told CNBC when asked if he would serve in the administration.
Founder of Key Square Capital Management, Bessent has been a leading fundraiser for Trump during his recent campaign for a second term.
Sources told the FT that Bessent might be 'measuring the drapes prematurely' as it's unclear whether he has actually been offered the role of Treasury Secretary.
Another source told the publication that Bessent was only seeking candidates for deputy Treasury secretary because he had been asked to do so by Trump's team.
'Some people may have mistaken those as direct interviews, which they were not,' the source said.
The Trump campaign have not yet commented on candidates for top positions in the new administration.
Bessent, praised by Trump as 'one of the top analysts on Wall Street,' has publicly supported several of the President-elect's economic policies, including imposing higher tariffs on imports.

In 2016, Bessent donated $1 million to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.[21]
In February 2024, Bessent hosted a fundraiser in Greenville, South Carolina, that raised nearly $7 million for Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign.[22] In April 2024, Bessent was a host for a Palm Beach, Florida, fundraiser that raised $50 million for the Trump campaign.[23]
In July 2024, Bloomberg Businessweek reported that Bessent was a key economic advisor to President Trump.[24] He is reportedly a candidate for United States Secretary of the Treasury in a second Trump administration,[25] and proposed a three-point economic plan for Trump modeled on Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s “Three Arrows” economic policy.[26]

Bessent sits on the university council at Yale University.[27] Bessent and his sister donated the Bessent Library to Yale University.[28] Bessent has endowed three scholarships at Yale: one for students who are first-generation college matriculants, one for students from South Carolina, and one for students from the Bronx.[28]
Bessent chairs the investment committee and is a member of the executive committee on the board of trustees of Rockefeller University.[29]
Bessent formerly served on the board of God’s Love We Deliver, an organization founded to deliver meals for homebound people with AIDS.[6][30]
He is vice-chair of Classical American Homes Preservation Trust, and a former board member of the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina.[29][31] Bessent is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.[6][29]
Philanthropy
In 2016, Bessent restored the historic Daniel Ravenel House and was later awarded the Preservation Society of Charleston’s Carolopolis Award for the project.[32][33][34] Bessent opened two foundations in 2022, and created the McLeod Rehabilitation Center at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Greenville, South Carolina.[32][35] He also supports the Prince’s Trust in London and the Harlem Children’s Zone in New York City.[32]
