Republican challenger Nick Begich III has built a lead in the race for Alaska’s U.S. House seat.

With about 93% of precincts reporting early Wednesday, Begich led incumbent Democratic Congresswoman Mary Peltola by about 11,000 votes, with 49.8% of the vote to Peltola’s 45.4%. The current vote tally is just first-choice ballots. If no candidate gets more than 50% of the vote, ranked choice tabulation will determine the winner on Nov. 20.

Begich arrived to cheers at his election night party at a hotel in downtown Anchorage. Attendees were also applauding national results showing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who endorsed Begich, winning key battleground states.

Begich told his supporters that Alaska has an important role to play in national politics.

“The pathway to America’s prosperity starts in Alaska, but it’s not good enough to know that,” Begich said. “We got to talk about it down in D.C. We got to be down in D.C. We only have one person in the House, and we need Alaska’s voice in the House.”

One attendee, Gretchen Stoddard, said she voted for Begich because she wants a Republican majority in the U.S. House.

“Honestly, I think it’s good for our state,” Stoddard said. “I think it’s good for my child, you know, the economy.”

Begich, an entrepreneur who lives in Chugiak, is a Republican from a prominent Democratic family. If his lead holds, he’ll win the seat once held by his grandfather. Congressman Nick Begich, D-Alaska, was campaigning for reelection in 1972 when his chartered plane disappeared enroute to Juneau...

Looks like Begich lead is big enough, even if all the 3rd place votes went to the Rat, he’d still win - nice flip

yep. because of the idiotic “ranked choice voting” rules Alaska has. Sarah Palin ran four years ago, I believe, and go the most votes but she didn’t hit 50%. So the ‘second choice’ of most people was a Dmon Rat.

DD shows him leading, but with less than the magic 50% figure.

Does anyone trust Rigged Choice Voting NOT to save Peltola’s ass if Begich can’t make it to 50% no the first ballot?

I hope we don’t have to find out.

DD says there’s 31 seats left to call (Alaska has not been called) and the GOP only needs to win 8 of the 31 to maintain control. They believe Republicans will win 12 of the 31, which isn’t a very good percentage but it’s good enough.

It would mean they go +1 in the House overall and win by the count of 222-213. Let’s see if they get there.

NOT big enough. There are also 4th place votes. Add all to her and he loses.

Was a repeal of RCV on the ballot in Alaska, anyone know?

If so, was RCV repealed...?

Yes it was on the ballot. Too close to call right now.

Of course even if repealed it wouldn’t affect the upcoming Begich-Peltola “runoff”, assuming Nick doesn’t get to 50%.
