I’m Catholic. There’s nothing wrong with this post. It’s true that this situation has been poorly dealt with by many bishops and that it is a source of evil. Pray for all in the hierarchy to do what is necessary to remove those who are a danger to people and doctrine.

At our parish, a rule was put into effect about 15 years ago: there must be two adults in situations involving children. I taught 6th grade Old Testament during that time. That rule worked perfectly.

I do recall one night where I was the only teacher, for 3 classes. Yikes! We found another adult, and the class was in my wheelhouse. The subject was agape love, a topic in one of Fr. Bob Spitzerz’ books. To say I nailed it is an understatement. Try and imagine 45 sixth graders listening intently, not talking for 30 minutes. Their questions were spot on, it was an incredible experience.

Simple rule, intended results.

I learned years later that our undergrad degrees from Gonzaga were both accounting degrees…I followed him by 2 years. Father Spitzer is one of the most dynamic speakers I’ve ever known.

The issue isn’t that the abuse happens. People understand that abusers will find a way to abuse.

The issue is how it’s been dealt with, or not.

Protecting and enabling the abusers and silencing the victims is wrong. Period.

God gives instructions in Scripture in how to deal with church discipline and sexual immorality within the church body, along with qualifications for deacon and elder.

If those were followed, none of this would be an issue.

As it is, the failure of the Catholic hierarchy to appropriately deal with the abuse when it comes to their attention, clean up their ranks, administer appropriate church discipline, and turn the perp over for appropriate justice through the court system, is its big and continuing failure.

We’ve been assured time and again over the years that someone in the Catholic hierarchy is dealing with this and it’s no longer the issue it once was.

Clearly that hasn’t happened.

It is not *hate* to recognize the facts of the matter, even if it feels good for you to screech about it like a deranged leftist.

Dude, we are all on the same page here and want the same thing, to protect the kids. The Church has failed to do so in far to many instances over the years and this commission is recognizing that there is a serious problem.

Humanity and the world needs a strong and growing Catholic Church.

Sadly, and I don't want to accuse you, but your denial is exactly what this commission is trying to address with the senior leadership within the Church.

I pray the Vatican takes it's recommendations seriously.

I can accept that there are Catholic priests who violate young boys (and girls). But what I *don't* understand is that we *never* hear similar stories about Protestant ministers,Rabbis,moslem imams (etc,etc) doing such things.

Thinking back to that NBC series "To Catch A Predator" they caught at least one physician,one lawyer,one cop,one teacher,one guy who *knew* Chris Hansen,one military man and one clergyman.That clergyman was a Rabbi....a youth counselor,in fact.

One would almost think that there's a concerted effort to suggest that that's what defines the Catholic church.

The issue of sex abuse existed (reduced to almost nil), it’s being significantly dealt with, procedures to guard against the continuance, and healing is ongoing.
