You had to be a viewer of ABC’s newscasts in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s to remember him. He was a prominent reporter for ABC in those times, and he did stories on the evening news alongside the likes of Frank Reynolds, Sam Donaldson, Ann Compton and Carole Simpson. I think Mr. Jarriel started with ABC news when Howard K. Smith was the anchor of their evening news; he was succeeded by Peter Jennings. David Brinkley, who was famous at NBC for the “Huntley Brinkley Report”, moved over to ABC and hosted their Sunday morning show among other duties. ABC also had Harry Reasoner, who had been a figure at CBS’ “60 Minutes”.
The two most abused words in the English language to describe a person such as Tom Jarriel are “legendary” and “iconic”. Better words to use would be “notable”, “respected” or “esteemed”. Jarriel had a good reputation and always struck me as fair and balanced, unlike some of his contemporaries.
Right up there with “iconic” and “awesome”...
Thanks.
I looked up his pictures and think he did seem familiar.
Nothing special. But Frank Reynolds was at ABC.
“He was “legendary”? That’s one of the most abused words in our era.”
Its seem every celebrity, no matter how minor and insignificant is called “legendary” when they clock off.
