Young Thug RICO Trial: Detective barred from testifying after comment about defendant[Georgia]

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - A former detective who investigated Atlanta rapper Young Thug and others was disqualified from serving as a witness in the musician’s extensive gang and racketeering trial on Thursday.

Former Atlanta police detective Ty Dennis had been testifying for hours when he mentioned that one of the defendants, Deamonte Kendrick, had been released from jail. At the time, the prosecution was questioning Dennis about Kendrick standing on the hood of a luxury vehicle owned by rapper and alleged rival gang member YFN Lucci.

The remark prompted Kendrick's attorney, Doug Weinstein, to call for a mistrial.

Judge Paige Reese Whitaker excused Dennis from the stand and informed both the prosecution and defense that he would not be permitted to testify again. She also ordered that his testimony and all associated exhibits be stricken from the record.

Whitaker noted that she would have granted the mistrial request if not for the fact that one of Kendrick’s charges referenced a prior conviction in the indictment.

This trial in Atlanta would be considered just a local story if not for the constant mis-steps of Fani Willis' office. She brought RICO charges against a bunch of thug rappers. It's a total waste of time and money. In addition it shows the complete incompetency of the Fulton County District Attorney's office. The DA's office should have charged them with their crimes under the usual criminal statutes and proceeded from there.

I suspect eventually a mistrial will be called in the case. Even if they get any convictions, those will be over-turned on appeal. Way too many errors to ignore.

These gangsters are Teflon coated. They pay off the local politicians and preachers/community leaders.

I believe it is both. The Atlanta rap scene is nothing but a bunch of thugs and criminals. There are old warehouses everywhere in the city that have been turned into music “studios” where they all gather every night to party.

Just about every week there is a story of a “shooting outside a music studio” in the Atlanta news. Local politicians cater to their every wish and I’ve heard they get “art grants” from the city of Atlanta.

I can understand a witness’ testimony given and then possibly impeached.
But It seems that to totally exclude testimony by her order is extreme judicial malpractice.

otoh happens all the time
