‘Crisis’ in unpaid rent leads D.C. to roll back eviction protections

The D.C. Council unanimously passed an emergency bill Tuesday to roll back pandemic-era eviction protections and rental-assistance policies that city leaders say have led to a crisis of unpaid rent, causing some affordable housing developments to be on the brink of foreclosure.

The legislation centers on D.C.’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program, which aids people with rent payments if they are experiencing emergencies and are at risk of eviction. While the council earlier in the pandemic sought to make it easier for people to access those funds and avoid eviction, Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) has acknowledged that those changes have had unintended consequences for affordable housing providers and require urgent correction.

Under the bill passed Tuesday, the council will undo policies that allowed people to self-certify their eligibility for ERAP and that required judges to repeatedly delay eviction proceedings if a tenant had a pending ERAP application. Those policies, lawmakers and administration officials say, have created a situation in which some people may not pay rent for months as they await rental aid that they may not ultimately receive.

Hmmm if you let people get away with not paying their rent, they don't! An epiphany! The moratoriums were an illegal, unconstitutional taking.

LMAO! Feel good story of the day.

By the way, city “leaders” ought to be in scare quotes. ‘cause they’re NOT real leaders!

I wonder what’s up with that?

I’m suspicious when a dem stronghold does something that could actually benefit the average Joe citizen.

Under Harris, EVERYBODY’s rent will be FREE!! And mortgages. And insurance. And health care. And mobile phones. And groceries. And cars.

It’s going to be a wonderful world when she gets elected. I’m so looking forward to having zero expenses.

Holy smokes! who would have guessed that if there were no consequences for not paying your rent people wouldn’t pay their rent. WHo could have possibly predicted that. Certainly not any Democrat politician. They probably still don’t understand the concept. They are all stuck on landlord evil - renter poor exploited innocent.

pretty hard to believe landlords would go bankrupt if they can’t collect the rent for 3 years on orders of the Government... who would of thought?

The public collapse of urban commercial real estate is just around the corner. They’ve been hiding it for a long time. Interesting times are a comin’. See tag line.

Rent may be free, but water and electricity may be unavailable.

I wonder what’s up with that?

A bunch of DC politicians and senior positions in the government (like cops and firefighters) own rental properties in the city, maybe?

I’m guessing powerful political influencers and contributors are among the landlords that are squawking.

They now need to evict citizens so the illegals have a place to go.

Isn’t amazing that liberals who claim to be the smartest people in the room still haven’t learned a thing about human nature.

Here’s what happened here. During Covid, people quit paying rent. When Covid ended, they got evicted. Now they have an eviction on their record. The best they could get was a trailer on the river with a huge deposit.

Then came Hurricane Helena.

Well, well, well, it costs money to run and maintain places, eh? And not all “landlords” are wealthy bastards who can afford to house everyone for free?

Not frequently enough, but reality now and then smacks the idiots running DC.

One of my favorites is when they tried to remove the requirement that W2 restaurant employees follow employer schedules. They got schooled badly on that one. Sadly, though, they killed off many restaurants, anyway, by supporting BLM riots, locking down following J6, and over-enforcing the Wuhu shutdown.
