I think you're right, and that there's two other things going on.
One, what campaign is going to hire a pollster who delivers bad news? The campaign can't use the pollster's results in their donation requests if they are far behind.
Two, the polls have to be portrayed as close so that when the 3 am ballot dump occurs and she "wins" it will be more believable.
