Poland, the Baltics etc. all desperately joined NATO because Muscowy was threatening their independence.

This was proven in 2008 when Georgia’s request to join NATO was rejected “for fear of provoking Russia” - and 6 weeks after this rejection, Russia invaded Georgia.

Finland didn’t see any need to join NATO until Putin’s second invasion of Ukraine in Feb 2022
